Third time at PSL and we had the best time. Nesmer our guide is a local ripper and got us on great waves. Renato another guide is very helpful and took photos. The staff is great and super friendly. The food is excellent, and the rooms are comfy with AC and hot water. We will be back for more.

We stayed with PSL from 3/1/2022-3/15/2022.
ACCOMODATIONS:
From the moment we contacted PSL inquiring a stay, there has not been a moment that we did not feel taken care of. Kim (owner/operator) was my main point of contact from starting the process of securing the dates we requested. Most hotels/hostels stop there, not PSL. They helped us arrange transportation from Liberia airport in Costa Rica. They offered to add the cost of transportation to our final bill. This is significant because getting to at ATM would require a bit of work, not to mention, take away from your time in Nicaragua.
They work with a fantastic taxi company who, just like PSL, did not miss a beat. They were waiting on arrival and we started our journey to the border and at no point was there any confusion on who was too retrieve us.
We, originally, were supposed to stay only a week at the lodge. We spent three days in Ometepe and had not booked anything following that trip. Not only were they able to accommodate our return to PSL, they transported us to the ferry service in Rivas. This is easily an hour drive so it's not exactly a small gesture. When we returned to Popoyo, they arranged for someone to get us. We made the mistake of boarding the 9am ferry, instead of the 10am. We contacted Kimberly, who was quick to respond. Because they were not expecting to pick us up until 11am, she'd sent one of her staff to retrieve us since he was nearby. To me, that is so above and beyond what we were expecting. They were also happily and able to organize day trips for the days we were too sore to surf. We really knocked a lot of experiences off our list with the expertise of Renato, who is more than just a surf guide.
STAFF: This was easily my favorite part of our stay and absolutely why we chose to return after Ometepe. The chefs were ridiculously talented at what they do. It's evident they make everything with love, based on presentation, as well as remembering personal preferences. Not only did we not have one bad meal while staying with PSL, the quality and quantity of each dish was top-tier. Chef Fran is ridiculously talented. Thank you, Chef! Erick, who is the chefs support, is there kindest person and we felt that he was genuinely excited to see us at every meeting.
SURF GUIDES: I cannot express how grateful I am to have gotten to learn from Renato. In addition to getting me to stand successfully on day one of training, he always gave feedback and tips to improve the next attempt. Admittedly, some people pick up surfing quicker than others, but it's not without the superb knowledge, encouragement, and guidance of Renato, that we successfully went from knowing absolutely nothing about surfing to being kind of okay. 😅😅 As if his guidance were not enough, he is the most light-hearted, kind, funny, insightful, I could go on- individual employee of an already rockstar team. His kindness and genuine love for everyone he comes in contact with is evident by his interactions with other staff, other students at the lodge who were not his responsibility, and most importantly, the community. He is so loved by everyone and every acquaintance he ran into, greeted him with love, smiles, and more than just pleasantries. And if THAT weren't enough, we became great friends during our stay and regularly keep in touch. Renato is truly a gem and PSL is so fortunate to have such a high caliber of individuals, who really made our stay feel like home. We have been to a lot of places all around the world and no hotel/accommodation comes close to what PSL provided. On our last night, there were tears shed. They truly felt like family and every shared meal felt intimate, not just a means to fuel for the day.
If you've never been to Nicaragua, specifically Popoyo/Guasacate, it is very remote so do your due diligence and bring everything that is recommended on the list provided by the lodge. Bring more sunscreen than you think you need. You'll, no doubt, have to reapply more than you think you will. From what I could tell, there was nowhere locally to purchase sunscreen, or really much of any other sundry.
In closing, we will absolutely return often. 10 out of 10 recommend PSL, you will not regret it. I think you may fall in love with all the staff, as we did, what's not to love?

Shocked that there are not yet reviews for PSL!
This was first surf lodge in Popoyo, and is the place to go if you want to surf this part of the Nicaragua coast. They have the area dialed, a fleet of 4x4 trucks and a boat, knowledgable surf guides, great food, and an awesome property. If you are looking to maximize your time surfing, no matter what your level, this is the place to go.
We surfed 2-3 sessions per day for the week, and consistently found the best waves with the fewest people. Many of the other hotels and lodges in the area are not equipped to do this. If swell is big and winds offshore, maybe you could stick to one spot, but for the week I was there met a few people who were SKUNKED in the variable conditions while we were getting it.
Everything is included (airport transfers, all meals, boat, 4x4), and they were really flexible in accommodating requests. For example, on the last day I wanted to spend a
few hours exploring the city of Granada before departing from MGA. No problem.
I found Nicaragua to be very safe - despite the Level III warning. The Pacific Coast is sleepy and rural, and the people really laid-back and kind.
It was hard to leave on the last day. I'm already Looking forward to going back to PSL next year.
