The Straßbourg Castle is an imposing building standing in a dominating position on a hill over the Carinthian city of Straßbourg and visible for miles around. It was built in the twelfth century as the residence of the bishops, under the aegis of the builder of Gurk Cathedral, Bishop Roman. It went through periods of destruction and reconstruction. In this regard, many stages of expansion and renovation were undertaken from the end of the sixteenth century to the start of the seventeenth century, resulting in the building as it is today.
When walking closer to it, the first part thereof to reach is the high Bailey Wall. It's a superb structure built in a strengthened way most probably in the fifteenth century. The entrance doorway to the Castle grounds is in baroque style. It looks like a church portal. It's an eye-catching doorway, the semi-circle arch in the middle being flanked by two robust columns with doric capitals and in the upper part of the doorway there is in a niche a statue representing the last great builder of the Straßbourg Castle, Cardinal Goess. As a whole, that doorway is a precious masterpiece of sculpture and architecture together.
The main tower is a stout white painted prism with a pyramid shaped slate roof. That colour combination is nice and in itself enhances the natural aesthetic character of the tower façade. It's indeed a well fortified tower as the remains of the double-arched windows show. On the third floor of the tower there are some holes used certainly for the posts supporting the battlement. There is a further fourth floor on which the faint remains of painted coats of arms can yet be seen. A dungeon exists on the lower floor whose interior looks dismal particularly because it's lit up only by a small opening in the ceiling.
On the other hand, the stable and box building in the Castle complex is a solid three storey edifice built in renaissance style in the eighties of the sixteenth century under the architect's Johann Anton Venda's design. The building was enlarged westward in the following century and linked to the inner part of the Castle by a beautiful wing with arcades. This is perhaps the most attractive part of the Castle outer part visible from the point where the stated building lies. Some refurbishments and renovations took place in the last decade of the twentieth century thus leaving the Castle segment concerned in the awesome state in which it is nowadays.
The main entrance is a very nice semi-circular arch doorway through which one needs to pass to accede to the Castle inner courtyard. It was designed in the late renaissance style, including four pilasters, two on each side, consisting of rough-surfaced masonry blocks with rebated edges, design which was also applied to the round lintel. There is a segmental pediment above the arch containing a triangular pediment typical of the aforesaid architectural style.
Once in the inner courtyard one can be startled by the marvellous sight which that part of the Castle offers to our view. The two-storey arcades on the court sides are really splendid. It's a charming design in a renaissance style. Those arcades were constructed in the eighties of the seventeenth century by the stonemason Johann Payr, under the aforesaid builder of Straßbourg, the Cardinal Goess, mainly for the purpose of safeguarding the structure of the medieval buildings. The courtyard itself is a fabulous porticated enclosure. The lower arcades have a rusticated structure and are twice as high as the arcades on the upper floor whose columns have a cylindrical shape and are much thinner then the square shaped ones below.
The Castle Chapel is a nice, small cosy temple dating back to the twelfth century, though it was enlarged in the fourteenth century and in the last quarter of the seventeenth century. Both enlargements referred to consisted in rising its height. Its interior is richly decorated with stucco. This is the work of Gabriel Wittini also carried out at the same epoch as the mentioned enlargements. There are also some nice gothic paintings by the artist Adam Klaus, depicting, among other motifs, scenes of Mary's life. The interior is thus very interesting, particularly the diaphragmatic arches resting on two solid columns with doric inspiration capitals. The Job altar is also very nice, with its gilded renaissance altarpiece in the centre of which one can observe the painting depicting the image of the Saint.
Inside the Castle is destined to house some exhibitions of different types of items. In the folklore museum one can see, for instance, some exciting ethnographic collections. Some rooms harbour an attractive setting for rural life simple objects, including rural furniture, kitchen utensils, tools, crockery and other household equipment which offer an insight into the living habits of the region rural dwellers. Within the items concerned, some are interesting and nice objects, such as beautiful wardrobes and consoles included in a series of handcrafted furnishings of a high quality. It's amazing to realise, thanks to the rural devices, how self-sufficient the local farmyards were. This may be gathered from the butter churns, draining racks for cheese making, flax processing and looms there displayed. In addition, some religious elements and art works are also in display as part of the exhibition. Among these a pulpit and some religious paintings and sculptures can be admired.
Particularly interesting is a collection of smoking pipes. It contains approximately 700 pipes from all over the world. One of the oldest is a meerschaum pipe from the end of the eighteenth century. It's a wonderful collection including porcelain, wood, glass and clay pipes of all types, forms and appearances.
Likewise, the collection regarding women's craftwork is interesting. It consists of beautiful dresses and other textile works from the time when the Biedermeier style prevailed to the fifties of the twentieth century. Some of the exhibits on display from the forties of the past century are unique and thus worth being observed. Besides, some embroideries representing rural life and the lifestyle of the nobility and middle classes are wonderful pieces of the art of needlework.
By all means, the Castle should be visited while in Straßbourg or in Gurk. The Castle in itself is a stunning architectural masterpiece which shouldn't be missed. Apart from that, the visit concerned constitutes an essential way to get to know about the past of the two mentioned cities and to have an insight on many aspects regarding Carinthian past, and likewise to contemplate many superb art works concerning needlework, rural life and other domains.

The large Schloss is filled with exhibitions. The permanent displays are of the founding of the Catholic church in Gurk. We were able to visit when "Women's Artworks" were on display. It showed projects created by women over the centuries - very impressive and well-done. I especially enjoyed all the handmade clothing.

This castle is less impressing then most of the other castle In the region. The outside is not really attractive.
Inside the castle, there is a museum about how people used to live in the past.
I would only advice to visit it, if you want a filler for 1 to 2 hours.
