Time Travel Back into the Past : Our Visit to The Village of the Holy Spirit (Sancti Spiritus)

Most Christian churches that observe Lent focus on it as a time of prayer, especially penance, repenting for failures and sin as a way to focus on the need for God’s grace. In keeping with the season of Lent I want to share with members my experience in the Village of the Holy Spirit in Cuba where for over 300 years, the bells of the Iglesia Parroquial Mayor del Espíritu Santo, have rung day and night, inviting parishioners in this central city to worship the Holy Spirit.
Our first impression entering the threshold of the church, from the bright sunlight outside into the dim room within was that we were entering hallowed grounds that have been intrinsically tied up with the history of time. A sense of peace prevailed as being the only visitors in the Church at that time we experienced complete silence away from the hustle and bustle of street activities outside. We were struck by the beautiful craftsmanship in the design of the altar, the walls, the windows as well as some of the artifacts which I presume could be classified as antiques today .
As we sat quietly on the wooden pews for a few seconds ,each in a silent prayer of our own my mind wandered for a moment on the first set of parishioners who sat in these pews. Who were they ? If these pews could talk what stories would they tell. Happy times as well as sad times which brought parishioners together in this house of worship. As the centuries have passed, the bells continue to toll, in sadness and happiness, and the clock in the church's 100-foot bell tower strikes every half hour.
This historic Church has a beautiful story to tell . According to one of the travel guidebooks in its early days, the Parroquial Mayor played a major role in efforts to convert the indigenous population to Christianity, in support of the conquistadors. The original adobe church, with its wooden, palm-thatch roof, but when the village was moved from its first location in 1522, a new parish was constructed.
Unfortunately most of the church’s archives, ornaments, and sacred vessels were destroyed during a pirate raid around 1660. Soon after the pirate attack, villagers started a movement to build a new church. The then mayor Don Ignacio de Valdivia, who happened to be a rich and go-ahead kind of man, bore the costs of the new building, the construction of which was concluded in 1680.

Today the Romanesque and Baroque architecture draws in tourists from all over and is one of the most famous landmarks in the city. The bell tower, the country's tallest when it was built, still has its original clock, which was bought in 1771 with 600 pesos that locals had collected for the construction of a bridge over the Yayabo River, another of the historical jewels found in this place of worship..
The chapel inside is said to have been attacked by pirates in the 17th century. Legend has it that the main entrance is known as the ‘forgiveness gate,’ after a woman known for being grumpy asked to be buried there in order to obtain forgiveness from God. The church has been recognized for its historic ,religious and cultural values, as well as for its Moorish-style architecture and has help the status of National Monument since 1978.
This visit to me was one of the main highlights of our trip to The Village of the Holy Spirit (Sancti Spiritus) on the 23rd January , 2024.

An original timber church was built in 1514 by the Spanish settlers, In the 17th century it was rebuilt in stone without the tower which was apparently added later. Like much of Sancti Spiritus it has been restored.

Superbe église à Sanct Spiritus. Elle est d'un bleu parfait, balade alentour très agréable. A environ 200 mètre de la place centrale en redescendant vers le pont de brique Yayabo.
