Nice short walk. Information along the way told the tragic story of Floyd Collins. Cave closed due to safety issues. Path well taken care of and nice and shady.

Easy walk through a quiet shady wood. The trail culminates at the Sand Cave, now inaccessible due to safety concerns, though walkers can peer through the underbrush to see the entrance.
A sign relays the history of the area, and the tragedy that befell one cave explorer, Floyd Collins.

The trail is very nice with plaques along the trail telling all about the tragic death of Floyd Collins. The cave explorer’s leg became pinned under a heavy rock trapping him in Sand Cave. His family and the nation as a whole tried to save him but ultimately the cave collapsed trapping him even more so. Eventually, after 17 days of rescue attempts they found his body. Eventually his body was recovered but Sand Cave remains a solemn place. Signs state not to stray off the wooden path so we did not enter the mouth of Sand Cave but some other visitors were down there exploring. Overall, it’s a nice short trail and worth the stop to learn about this tragic historical event.

I absolutely loved this... We actually went into the entrance of the cave my husband went back further. Floyd Collins got trapped 60 ft below the surface & perished. Good piece of history here. Well worth the short walk to see it.

This is a very short walk, like a 1/4 mile round trip, through the forest that has so many levels of enjoyment.
First, it is the first thing you will see entering the park from Cave City. It has the great national park entrance sign at the same pull over.
Second, just a great opportunity to enjoy the thick forest of the park. The miles surrounding the national park are mainly farmland as much of the park before the NP designation. However, the NP now is 80 years of forest growth that provide a great walking experience in this lush forest. We visited at dusk and the sounds of songbirds was simply amazing and one of the most enjoyable moments in the park above ground.
Third, it is one of many and multiple natural entrances into the world's largest cave system. The end of the boardwalk provides a great view into this natural entrance. It is not advisable to venture into the entrance for #4.
Fourth and perhaps most important, this cave and attraction have significant historical importance to the national park and its formation. In this cave in 1925, renowned cave explorer Floyd Collins was trapped and eventually died before a rescue party could reach him. The saga lasted nearly 17 days and newspapers covered it around the world. In fact near the end, the story attracted 10,000 people of the cave in an almost carnival atmosphere. The story and death created such sentiment to move the Federal Government to step into acquire the cave and land and make it a National Park for everyone.
For all of these reasons it is a great stop in the walk.

This short trail is located at the entrance to Mammoth Cave National Park. Great way to get out and stretch your legs and take a photo with the main entrance sign. Unfortunately, this cave received nationwide attention when a caver became stuck and rescue attempts were unsuccessful. But no worries for us because the trail only takes us to a view of the cave entrance. Handicap accessible.

This is basically a short walk thru the woods to Sand Cave which you can't get to. The path is a very nice walkway that is wheelchair accessible. The path has a few signs on what took place in Sand Cave in the 1800's. You can read about it on the internet however. As far a seeing anything, you can't. The walkway stops high above the cave entrance. We heard people in the cave but to get there from the walkway you would have to climb over the handrails, down a step, rocky hillside and down about 50 feet to the bottom where you could finally walk to the cave. Not sure what it looks like inside. Maybe worth the adventure.. I don't know.

You can knock out 2 things at the Sand Cave. There is a Mammoth Cave National Park entrance sign at the end of the trailhead parking area, so you can get a picture and then take the walk back to the Sand Cave. It's short. Maybe 10 minutes to get back to the cave. The natural cave entrance is one of the larger that I have seen in the area, at least from a distance. Don't forget to read the info boards as you go, it's very interesting. One of the guides the day before had told the story of Floyd Collins which is pretty interesting.

We traveled with young kids and had entered the park the previous day. We knew the history, therefore when we stopped to get a picture at the sign, we walked down. It wasn't strenuous, and we were able to imagine the difficulty in getting a person out!
