We stopped for the third time this year at the Steppes Sculpture and walked through to the homestead (950m walk). We love the history and feel of this area. We even went later on to Bothwell and found the grave of Marjorie Wilson who lived here all her life until 1975. We saw an echidna on our walk too.

The Steppes sculpture and homestead are well worth stopping at - the wombat sculpture in the middle is lovely and the history of the area is interesting.

The Great Western Tiers is a wonderful place to visit.
The raw nature displayed in all its glory you shouldn't be surprised to be surprised!
If you like to fish, then the surrounding lakes offer some of the best brown trout fishing in the world (yes, you can find rainbow trout and brook trout too).
If you venture out, make sure you tell someone! The weather can close in in a matter of minutes; taking you from a bright sunny calm day and into a blistering cold front with 100Km winds, driving rain (sometimes hail and snow) so ensure you are well-prepared.
I've personally seen a change come in so fast that (despite carrying all the necessary wet gear), I was "blasted" down the mountain side to safety. It all occurred within 15 minutes. Suddenly, the large brown trout that had been playfully porpoising in front of me disappeared. I looked up, and about 1Km away the dark foreboding clouds were rushing at me.
Hastily, I packed up and within 15 minutes I was engulfed in freezing rain that drove me down the side of the mountain path.
Not for the faint-hearted!
Having said this, don't miss a chance if you get one. You'll not regret it!

We chose the 'alternative' route to Hobart. It was really scenic. We traveled across the flat, rich agricultural area, then through Poatina and up into the Great Western Tiers. The views as we went up were impressive. When the road reached the top of the tiers, the landscape was harsh, stunted trees, rocks, little undergrowth. What a difference. Then we reached snow, covering all the vegetation, really pretty.
We stopped to look at the Steppes sculptures that were beside the road (5581 Highland Lakes Rd, Steppes TAS 7030). We drove past a historic homestead (the Steppes) as we didn't realise it was there until too late. We could have spent much more time there. There were also lots of opportunities for hikes and cross country skiing.
Food was available at Poatina.
