I’m sorry to share that as an artist who was meant to exhibit with Mill Green in their gallery space for September 2023, I’d advise all artists that this is not a reliable gallery to work with as they are exceptionally unprofessional and not supportive for the arts or artists in general.

Prior to September, I asked repeatedly for an invoice from them and Christopher, the assistant curator kept putting me off and suggesting I settle for a receipt from the card reader when I come to install. He indicated that Sophie, who was supposed to be in charge of curation was “too busy” to send me an invoice for the hiring of their gallery space for the month of September. I’d booked with them for exhibiting in September at the beginning of the year and had signed a contract at that time which indicated that they would be installing the exhibition and that I should provide various label lists and written biographies for the show along with my artwork which was meant to be 90% for sale with a good percentage of it going to the running of the Mill. I’m out of pocket from the preparations for this exhibit and feel that it is even more of a shame that I have heard nothing from the Mill as I do feel an apology was in order.

In my experience, they ignored the contract I signed with them and even the curator was on holiday when I came to install my work. I pulled out because I felt I couldn’t trust the business since they had no interest in honouring our contract.

Since pulling out of the exhibition, I haven’t heard a word from the curator and feel I’ve dodged a bullet in not exhibiting, though I’m very disappointed by this experience and especially that they treat local artists in this way. For this reason, I felt it important to share my experience as I hope to safeguard other perhaps less experienced artists from what I’ve been through.

I’ve been working as an exhibiting artist for over twenty years in multiple countries around the world and can say this experience is one of just three bad exhibiting experiences I’ve had in all this time.

If you’re an artist of any level and considering exhibiting with this gallery, stay away and find somewhere else where you will be respected and appreciated. This certainly isn’t the place for any artist.

I was interested to visit the Mill Green Museum and was impressed.

There is a very good display about the musicians who were from the local area and places they performed in Hatfield. I was surprised to discover one of the Rolling Stones was from Hatfield!

There are other things to see in the mill including the mill itself with its waterwheel. There's also a decent gift shop where you can buy locally milled flour from the mill.

The only disappointment for me was that I wanted to pay to visit by cash and they did not have any money to enable me to do this.

Very friendly staff.
To get full benefit of a visit here if you read through the exhibits, view the small garden (note there will be road noise) you will have an ok time. But to have a truly memorable time and experience the amazing knowledge and have a tour by the miller who is a real asset to the team.
In total if you do all this its a visit of 2.5 hours plus their tea room (1 hour) which serves basic items but uses their flour. Therefore a good morning out keeping the mill alive.

More for adults and older children. Younger ones won't get full benefit.

Take extra layers, and thick socks for the mill, if cold outside it's very cold in the mill (not the museum, the mill as you would expect).

I visited on Friday morning of the February half term 2023 the reception lady (who normally works at the weekends) was very friendly and helpful. The museum is lovely and the two exhibitions when I visited were about Panshanger Park and lost buildings of Hatfield which were very interesting. The mill was working and the miller was there to show you round. I spent more time than anticipated there, bought some things from the shop, there was also the mill's own flour with bread recipes, and had a lovely picnic in the mill gardens overlooking the River Lea. I thought it would be quiet but there were many other visitors there as well all of whom seemed to enjoy themselves.

A wonderful little museum and working mill. Didn’t feel overwhelmed by size or amount of info. Had plenty of time to read all of the great info supplied. Fabulous lunch of paninis followed by scones in the garden. Fantastic to see a local business supporting out of home care young people in their bid for employment.

Guided tour by Alex around the mill and showed how the water mill works and how flour is made, and you can buy packets of flour here. A lady showed us around the museum then you can go round at leisure. One hour needed. £5 entry. Tours on the hour. Check before arriving on their website.
No refreshments here but use of toilet available.
One mile from Hatfield station or half hour walk. Went here after going to Hatfield house.
Great for school children and adults.

Such a lovely, informative place. The staff were so helpful and kind, they took us around as it was not too busy. The gardens are stunning and the tearoom where I had afternoon tea and a sandwich were equally fantastic! Their project, where teenagers learn the art of hospitality and catering was heartwarming, but equally, I definitely had better service and beautiful presentation of food from these young people than a lot of other cafe’s! Overall, a very enjoyable and beautiful day out. We got some great pictures! Thank you!
