Yes, the museum features the history of tobacco farming, but it's much more. You travel back to the 1930s and learn about a simpler way of life. Although I don't smoke or condone it, I enjoyed this museum.

You start the museum with a video from 2004 about a family farm raising tobacco. The video really could use an update but I am guessing not much has changed in the way tobacco is raised in the last sixteen years. They are exhibits in a museum and then four or five buildings which include an old farmhouse, a tobacco curing barn, a kitchen, and a blacksmith shop. Not really attended but you can walk around and take a look. They got a cat who keeps the mice population down. I really did like it but understand this is a little rough around the edges.

Being a native NY'er stopping here really let me observe the tools, tasks, hardship and family strength that existed in family tobacco farms, many share cropper families. In Similar to many farms of the early 1900's this display provided insights to the local farmers of tobacco and crops for their pantries.
Enjoyable overall with the displays but the authentic house, barn and blacksmith shop were excellent. Also an original 1 room schoolhouse shows how students gained their education.

An eye opening and interesting video about all the steps needed to make a good, marketable product left me knowing that the emphasis concerning the dangers of smoking may be misplaced. The chemicals used to create a batch of snuff, pipe tobacco, a cigar, or a cigarette likely far exceeds the dangerous natural chemicals like nicotine inside each leaf sold. The museum offers a glimpse into the past when North Carolina was a major producer of the golden leaf. Its focus is on the times and the people involved as much as on the plant. Some humorous misspellings and misuse of language made me doubtful of the "facts," but history is generally seen through a blurry lens anyway so it did not bother me too much. Outside there are a number of buildings to walk into and descriptive signage that could use some cleaning up. Nothing seems to have received much maintenance. Please tell me they don't actually offer a hog slaughtering demonstration Wilbur. There is plenty of parking and a small gift shop.

A wonderful representation of life on a tobacco farm in rural NC.
The history of farming is explored as more than just tobacco is grown
on the farms. Cotton and soy are also grown and their displays are equally as interesting. #Diversity is explored as the history of slavery is addressed as well
as segregation. Country Doctor display is also surprising as many tonics and old fashioned remedies are set out for the inquisitive. Okay areas are setup inside as well as outside with ring toss, jump rope, marbles to enjoy some old time games.
Enjoyed the kitchen setups from 1800's-early 1900's wood stoves.
The horse buggies, the tobacco auction house, and the early techniques of
soil conservation. Take your time this is well worth it; families, history buffs,
farmers and urbanites will all love this museum.

While stuck in holiday traffic for several hours, I noticed the small brown museum sign on the highway and decided to take a short break. I'm glad I did. The intro movie shows modern day farming and techniques of drying tobacco leaves. As you step into the next room, you follow the trail of dioramas and re-creations of the history of local tobacco farming all the way from planting to the auction houses. It is more than a tobacco museum, it shows the early farming life in the southeast. After you leave the museum area, you go outside to visit the various sheds and small buildings that made the old farm work. The museum and buildings are full of antiques. In addition, to the farmhouse, smokehouse, iron workhouse, and well, there is a one room schoolhouse on the museum property. I took lots of photos. A great visit. I will return.

While in NC visit a friend we went to the Tobacco Farm Life Museum. Being from Lancaster County, PA this was very interesting to us. We saw a short film about growing of tobacco....toured the museum as well as the other buildings on the property. School house/barn/workshops/house. We totally enjoyed our time there....definitely worth seeing!

We spent an hour as we drove through on a trip with my mother-in-law.
A short movie in the front office followed by a tour within the museum and a self guided tour of a half dozen out buildings with interpretive signs provided insight into tobacco farms of yesteryear. I would recommend stopping and perhaps driving ~30 minutes out of your way to visit.

We needed a break from driving down I95, and this museum happened to be in the right spot. We learned so much about modern tobacco farming from the short video. Then you go into their museum and see all kinds of cool historical farm life displays. But there really is more than that - they have a bunch of neat items from wedding dresses, to toys, to tractors. After touring the indoor display you wander the beautiful ground and go into the historical buildings. Theres also a nice picnic area. And they even have RV parking!

A great deal of thought and research made this small museum chockful of interesting objects and fascinating signage that makes the period come alive. The buildings, too, that were moved to the property were well curated. This museum can easily take over a hour to visit and more if a particular topic is of special interest as the exhibits focus by topic on such things as buggies, household items and clothes. Kudos to This private museum. It offers a great contribution to understanding North Carolina history in the area.
