We passed the sign for the "Historic Dunkirk Lighthouse" on our leisurely drive on the shores of Lake Erie and had to check it out - and were so glad we did. Were happy to buy a ticket, thinking we would just walk around the grounds, but knowing "admission" dollars would support this gem. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that we were to receive a personal guided tour of the lighthouse and keepers' home. The house is charmingly and authentically restored with furnishings from bygone eras, and the upstairs bedrooms house military artifacts from all branches of the military (with Coast Guard being in another small building). We were able to climb to the top of the lighthouse and the view was breathtaking.
Our guide was so entertaining and knowledgeable making the tour totally worthwhile. Additionally, he was committed to making sure we and the surroundings were thoroughly sanitized as well, so we felt safe in this crazy COVID time.
This stop is a must if you like history!

What a great place to go spend part of the day. Right on Lake Erie, you can't go wrong with the view. Lots of historical artifacts on the grounds and in the building, take your time looking. The only challenge may be walking up the steps to the top of the light house, which is beautiful and I could spend all day up there.
If you are in the area, make sure to stop!

We were on vacation traveling back top Wyoming after going to Niagara Falls, NY and wanted to check out some of the lighthouses along the way. I also was taking pictures for my grandson's Flat Stanley project, and wanted to get a picture with him and Lake Erie. This lighthouse has just a small grounds to look around, but has major historical happenings. The first shots of the War of 1812 happened on the grounds. It cost to take the lighthpuse tour, so we didn't go. However, I walked into the gift shop to hopefully buy some postcards, when the tour guide saw my Flat Stanley. The tour guide was a 2nd grade teacher for many years and knew the books and the story. He gave me 26 of their color books and stickers so that Flat Stanley could give them to the class. He also gave Flat Stanley his very own tour of the lighthouse, taking him up to the top and taking pictures with the Fresnel lighthouse lens that was originally brought from France for $10,000 and is now worth $1.5 M. The gift shop had all kinds of memorabilia and POSTCARDS!! A big THANK YOU to Mr. LIGHTHOUSE DAVE BRISKA for a fabulous talk, wonderful stories and great pictures of your beloved lighthouse. I highly recommend this attraction. Tell them Flat Stanley sent you!

This was a 2 for 1 tour You get to tour the lighthouse, climbing up to the observation deck, for a great look, at the surrounding land. But, the secret of this tour, is the Lighthouse keeper's house, which is filled with too many historical items to describe. The items on display, for the most part, have been donated by local residents, or the families of former lighthouse keepers.Being a US Army Veteran, the second floor was my favorite part of the tour. There were more historical military items, dating from the Civil War to Desert Storm, than I have ever seen before. The 2nd floor, was sectioned off to display items by branch of service. ( Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Coast guard. Again, the special thing about the items displayed, was that they were donated by local service members who had survived conflicts, or families of service members who gave their life defending their country. There is also a separate building displaying more nautical artifacts than I can describe. .Our tour guide Dave was very friendly, and very knowledgeable about everything, A great visit.

Stopped here to show my kids the birthplace of my Grandmother. In fairness, I did not have the time to take the inside historical tour of the lighthouse, but I thought the park and grounds were very nice. Many outdoor historical markers explaining the area during the War of 1812, and some explaining the function of the lighthouse. Nautical artifacts are laid variously about the yard. The milk bottle buoy at the entrance is fascinating. The view of Lake Erie is very nice. This day the water was borderline Caribbean in appearance. Really. There was an artist club there painting.
Adjacent is a pebble rock/ sand beach (like all Lake Erie beaches are) and my kids were in the water in a heartbeat. I’d call the beach borderline wild, but taken care of by the town. Dogs allowed, no facilities,no concessions, no shade, but very nice nevertheless. Locals walk and swim their dogs here. Try not to let the NRG plant next to the beach interfere with enjoying it.
Upon leaving, I chanced to look up a couple blocks down, with the lake to my left, and saw a view across an inlet that is exactly a picture taken in 1923 with my 10 year old gramma and her sister standing in the foreground holding their ice skates. That alone made the day.
