Where are they?
Okt. 2020
I had several relatives who were at Point lookout. The history is quite remarkable. They were originally buried separately with markers, probably wooden. Currently, they are buried in one mass graves, where they had been moved several times as the tide and soil erosion made necessary. The Numbers According to Professor Bart Talbert

Several years ago, Prof. Bart Talbert was the speaker in the Pt. Lookout Confederate Cemetery and he talked about the number of dead at Pt. Lookout and how many were/were not accounted for. It was a haunting that has never left me. The federal government gave us a list of only 3,384 names that are inscribed on the monument plaques. From prisoners' diaries and other reports, we have learned that over 14,000 died while incarcerated in this prisoner of war camp. Seems like someone owns us the whereabouts of over 11,000 prisoners! I can still hear Prof. Talbert saying...."do the math folks! These numbers are wrong! Take the number of deaths that the prisoners reported and times that by the number of days the camp was open and you'll get a far better number than what's inscribed here in the cemetery!" Another government cover up? "One" unknown is listed on the monument...are the feds saying that "one" person has no name? So far, I have 538 additional names of those who died at PL, but are not listed on the monument.

Quick roadside stop for some interesting history.
Juni 2019
I have stopped in on my way to the Southern Point, and it is a nice short stop to read about some of the history of the Civil War in that area and pay respects to the people that died in that awful conflict.

A short stop outside Point Lookout State Park
Jän. 2020
A small cemetery of thousands with a large marker bearing the names of those known to be buried here. Very little parking here but you could probably park at the nearby Memorial Park and make the short walk.

it is a shame that this cemetary has to stay under 24 hour guard. people can not change history by distroying monuments and grave yards. please respect this place. This list all the soldiers that died in the Point Lookout Prison.

Memorial to thousands of confederate soldiers starved to death in Union prison camp.
Dez. 2018 • Paare
The memorial is very well kept listing the names of the persons that they know died here. Many more prisoners died than records were found to identified the dead. In December 2018 there was a guard parked at the entrance 24/7 guarding the monument from vandals wishing to destroy history.

Sleepy angry park ranger
Nov. 2018 • Paare
While traveling with a dog we are extremely respectful of the fact that they’re not welcome in all areas. So when we stopped to view the memorial the first thing we did was check the signs....nothing posted so out we go. WOW mistake as we wake the park ranger up in the car next to us who proceeds to scream at us as NO Dogs allowed. She was not interested in debating the fact there were no signs. NICE, good for you Maryland

Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery dates to 1870 when the Federal Government moved the remains 1 mile inward from Point Lookout and were buried in a common grave. There is a 80' obelisk marking the spot along with a 1876 State of Maryland monument to Confederate Soldiers and Sailors. This is just a short distance from the Confederate Memorial Park.

Another Piece of Civil War History
März 2018 • Allein/Single
The Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery is locate before Rt. 5 turns into Point Lookout State Park. According to the history of the U.S. Civil War, the Federal Government made the Point Lookout into a military hospital and a prisoner-of-war camp at the site. The soldiers who died at the prison camp are now buried at Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery located north of the historic prison. A great piece of Civil war history. The Cemetery is maintained by the U.S. Park Service.
