Crowded, trash, bugs and jellyfish! Don’t go on the weekends! For a State Park it sure has a lot of Non State Visitors!

Point Lookout - great park with a nice campground
Juli 2021
We had a good experience as we tent camped for 3 nights. We had a spacious site in the Green Loop. Although most sites were also roomy and most were private, I'd recommend this loop because it's near the water and was breezy while we were there on hot days in July. The side of the loop near the water is less shaded than the opposite side. We camped mid-week and there were only a few other campers in this loop. The bathrooms are good with hooks, a shelf and bench in the showers (appreciated!). The camp store is open only on weekends so bring what you need. Ice and firewood are available all the time.

I was concerned about the bugs and heat since we were camping in July. As it turned out, the bugs weren't too bad, mostly because of the breeze off the water. However, on our last day it got fairly humid and the bugs came out. Not the worst we've seen but a nuisance.

Although we were camping we were hoping to explore the area a bit and find some nice drives and good restaurants, but there's not much around the park. We tried the only restaurant nearby (Courtney's) and it was expensive and the food wasn't very good. (We are not all that hard to please, so our advice is to avoid it.). So, we stuck to the camp cooking after that. Be sure to bring food and supplies on your way in.

The park itself is beautiful. Lots of spots to sit near the water, fish and crab. The beach was small but nice, great for kids. Huge wooded picnic area near the beach with lots of families and groups having picnics. The jellyfish warning was moderate. I got stung once but it seemed that no one else had any issues since folks were in the water for lots of time. (Stay away from the rocks, seems to be where there's more likely to be jellyfish.) There's no alcohol in the park, and it's pretty sedate (at least on the weekdays we were there). Great sunset views out at the lighthouse and a deer passed by just to add to the evening!

Pros - Nice campground with some water sites and lots of wooded, shady sites, good bathhouse and fishing/crabbing pier at the camp. Great park with small beach, shade on the beach, lots of fishing spots and pier, docks for crabbing, plenty of wooded picnic areas, wildlife, some historical sites.
Cons - Bugs, jellyfish, camp and park stores closed on weekdays, small beach could get crowded

Beautiful Park, but avoid weekends if you can
Juni 2021
Point Lookout State Park is a beautiful location. I am familiar with the area and knew we should avoid weekends, because of the massive influx of people, most of whom have no regard for cleanliness, sanitation and respect for the environment. Although during pretty much our entire stay (Thursday & Friday), we had torrential downpours, it was spectacular to have the park only sparsely populated. We stayed at Hoffman Loop #137, which turned out to be close enough to the clean,, modern bathrooms but far enough not to be bothered by other campers (very few of them) coming and going. #137 has a view of many of the birds of the area. We also saw turtles and tree frogs. #137 is also near the Hoffman Loop boat/fishing dock. If you want electric, make sure to specifically confirm that your site will have it, as some do and some don't (#137 does not have electric). The Park staff were friendly and knowledgeable. If it's open, take some time to go to the museum and store, if for no other reason than to familiarize yourself with the wildlife you may be lucky enough to see during your stay. The Point Lookout Lighthouse has been renovated and would be gorgeous for a large wedding or family reunion. The open-air buildings are so huge, you could have a music festival there. We will definitely be back to Point Lookout State Park to camp, although we will try Green Loop next time because it seems to be nearer to the water (but unfortunately with much less tree cover for shade). All the local stores in Ridge and Scotland carry almost everything you may have forgotten to bring. If you want a fresh, quality breakfast, I highly recommend the Baymart Convenience Store about 10 minutes from the Park at 16951 MD-235. Not fancy, but delicious and reasonably priced (they are also a liquor and fishing supply store).
Now for the bad news. The mosquitoes there are of the industrial variety. I mean, their bite is the most itchy and long-lasting of any I have experienced in any part of North America. Bring bug spray, bug repellant candles, lanterns, repellant bracelets, necklaces. Bring mosquito netting. Wear as much light-weight full-covering garments as possible. I'm telling you, I've never in my 53 years ever suffered so much from mosquito bites, anywhere, ever. I'm immediately investing in netting and mosquito-repellent gear of every kind, because camping at Point Lookout State Park is totally worth it. Bad news #2: No night fishing.

Perfect Week Getaway
Juni 2021 • Paare
We decided to camp mid week instead of weekend and we practically had the area to ourselves. We spent a lot of time crabbing and we’re very successful. (5 dozen). Delicious.
Bathrooms were clean. Campsites we’re large.
We spent some time at the beach even though the water was cold.
This was our third Tyrion here and we’ll probably return soon.

Ruined by Mosquitoes

Location was ok, but campsite was swarming with mosquitoes. We were intending to stay three nights, but left after two after receiving 40+ bites each.

Wonderful Summer Camping Experience
Aug. 2020
We camped at Point Lookout for 10 days arriving Friday afternoon August 14 and departing late Sunday morning August 23. We stayed in the Green's Point circle using a travel trailer. We also brought a boat with us. We had a great time considering we had torrential down pours Saturday and Sunday 08/15 &16. After that we were constantly on the go -- crabbing and fishing. We caught enough crabs every day to have for a mid-afternoon "meal". We couldn't eat them all so we picked the crab meat for crab cakes -- they were delicious.
We had little interaction with the park staff, but, to the extent we did it was very friendly and courteous. The Camp store was closed due to the pandemic, so we had to run to the local convenience stores in Ridge to the extent we needed something other than ice which we purchased from the Ranger station. Our site faced the water so we always seemed to have a breeze. Whenever the breeze stopped, though, we found ourselves applying liberal amounts of Woods Off to keep from getting carried away.

The only real negative I have to mention was the community restrooms. The week we camped the Green's Point restrooms had no hat water. We had to shower at a restroom in another circle. Also during the week, the restrooms were not cleaned (they were clean from Thursday afternoon to our departure on Sunday).

My family and I have been doing this trip on an annual basis since 2006. We intend to do it again next year.

Beware of not having a satisfied day .
Aug. 2020 • Familie
If your from the MD I wouldn’t recommend to have a cookout with family . There was flies everywhere. So bad that when we went to the parking lot. Big ass flies would come in the car. To all my Latinos don’t even try to bring hammocks they will immediately tell you to take them down. The beach was nice but my family got stung by the jelly fish. We even left early cause the mosquitos sorry the FLYS were having us as lunch . Take bug spray but trust me your food won’t be saved .

Not the Best Trip
Aug. 2020
I took the day off and wanted somewhere new to explore, so my husband planned a trip to this state park. The Civil War Museum/Nature Center and park store were all closed due to coronavirus. The park store is where you can rent kayaks, canoes, and boats yet you obviously cannot due to it being closed. They have a lighthouse where the Potomac and Chesapeake Bay meet, but the whole area was closed off due to construction. Luckily, the restrooms were open. The park had two beaches, a pet beach and a swimming beach. The swimming beach was small. We did not find any hiking trails. We found a sign that led us to a former POW camp, but that trip was shortened after I was attacked by mosquitos. I got about 15 bites in 5 minutes. Needless to say, we had a half day trip planned to go this state park and were only there for about an hour in which most of it was sitting on some rocks staring at the Chesapeake bay and looking at all the jellyfish in the Potomac. This mostly looked like a park for locals to swim, fish or take their pet, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it right now with everything being closed.

Fun summary day trip
Juli 2020
In the ever-expanding search for something within driving distance to do during the pandemic, I decided to visit Point Lookout; it had been on my radar for a while. It is about a 90-minute drive from DC and it was well worth it for me, even if it was a blazingly hot July day. I arrived at about 3 PM and the fee was $7. I drove to the end of the peninsula and which provides lovely vistas and fishing on either side. There were quite a few families hanging out, grilling, etc. but not so much that I couldn't keep distant. It was also a Civil War prison camp and cemetery, so there is a bit of history to explore as well. While the park store is closed, right behind is a picturesque dock with a kayak launch and a couple of benches. All in all, a very nice day trip.

Nice morning visit on July 3rd
Juli 2020
Drove over to enjoy the beach and the pier. The entrance fee must have been reduced due to the COVID 19 closures. The family enjoyed the beach and view until the park got a bit too crowed. They probably should have limited the number of cars and guest during COVID 19. Still worth the trip and a value with the reduced fee-go early.
