This 101-acre (40.9 ha) wildlife sanctuary had color-coded, named, and marked loop trails. A map kisk was near parking. One trail passed Dennison’s Falls and its former mill site. Despite it’s being a sanctuary, some visitors insisted on letting their dogs run loose while they walk its trails. The trails were good for bird watching. Among trail users were hikers, runners, and dog-walkers, no bicyclists. Parking was in a dirt lot near a couple of picnic tables. An outhouse on the mill river trail needed some TLC, but was usable. I enjoyed my visit here; I disliked only the dogs, which are more appropriately exercised elsewhere.

This is basically a small preserve next to the road with a few short trails. There is not really much to see.

It was a good place to go for a day hike. You get to experience a walk on the woods without going to far away from civilzation. It is not a strenous hike either.

Great trail for snowshoeing. Only one other person on the trail today. Looking forward to seeing it in the summer.

Isolated property, far from the craziness of downtown Freeport. We wanted some quiet and solitude, and that's what we got. We took the ridge trail, about 1.6 mile. Well marked except in two places, near the bench loop and near the cabin clearing where we had to search out the next blaze and consult the map, but no big deal. Wide trail in some places; very overgrown in others. Amazing amount of poison ivy--at ankle and waist level. Be careful. Also, bring bug spray. No views.

Our hotel host recommended this, which we appreciated. Walk from town on fairly busy road, but doable. Scenic area, waterfall, old mill stone dam interesting. Not much wildlife, especially for a bird sanctuary, and a trail map would have been helpful. Plenty of apples on the ground, though. Just when we were about to turn back after a good ways on mill trail, we spotted something most expected - the rusty hulk of an old car, Model T Ford type. Would love to know the story behind that!

Our walk lasted about an hour through thick woods, some grown up fields with grass paths, out to a stream. Lovely area. There are picnic tables and toilet facilities.

It's not for everyone. But if you are looking for a pleasant place for a stroll or a picnic, this would fit the bill. It is within easy reach of downtown freeport and is one of many places worth exploring in town while you are not shopping.

This is a nature sanctuary first and foremost and its spartan visitor facilities reflect that purpose. Access is by a short dirt road. Parking is on a hardpan gravel lot. Public use is free. A few picnic tables are located nearby. A trailhead box may hold trail maps or may be empty. The trails are well enough marked with painted blazes for those used to hiking in the Maine woods; they are intended for hiking, not biking. Tall plants encroach on a narrow creek-side trail but this trail and others are mowed time to time. A few rustic benches dot the trails. A caretaker's private house stands near the sanctuary's center. The stone ruins of a mill and mill dam are on a tidal inlet nearby. I like best the chance for quiet contemplation of nature here. If fearful of or allergic to poison ivy, I'd avoid walking the creek-side trail.

We were looking forward to a nice hike around the sanctuary. Unfortunately, it seems so few people visit, the trails are mostly grown over, with vines, sticker branches and poison ivy everywhere. We hike so we are not babies. This place could be really nice with a little TLC and trail maintenance.
