Top-notch university in central Illinois. Tour the Illini Union, walk the Main Quad, check out the historic buildings, take a photo at the Alma Mater statue, stroll through the bustling Campustown. But I'm biased, I graduated from the school. I recently attended a Fighting Illini men's basketball game at State Farm Arena and had a great time.

My mother graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1939, when it wasn't fashionable for women to attend college. She influenced me to attend Illinois and I graduated in 1962. Our paver is located at the east entrance to the Illinois Alumni Association's building. We were always proud of our college experience and we always enjoyed coming back to visit the campus. Much has changed since I was a student in 1958-1962. Campustown is bustling and vibrant with new restaurants, bars and shops. My old campus haunt, Illini Hall, long-time home to The Daily Illini, the student newspaper, is earmarked for demolition. Historic Altgeld Hall, where I had several classes, is being renovated. My fraternity is vacant, begging for renovation and recolonization. The engineering campus covers space once occupied by Illinois' baseball field. The 340,000-square-foot Activities and Recreation Center, built in 1971, is one of the largest on-campus recreation centers in the country. But some things remain the same. Founded in 1867, the U of I has earned a reputation as a world-class leader in research, teaching and public engagement. It is known for its education, law, engineering and business schools and its high level of research activity. The campus is known for its landscape and architecture as well as its distinctive landmarks. Several buildings and sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Harker Hall, the Main Library, Morrow Plots, Louise Freer Hall, Astronomical Observatory and the Experimental Dairy Farm Historic District. U of I has the second largest university library in the United States after Harvard, the fastest supercomputer on any university campus, the largest public engineering library in the United States and the largest Greek organization in the country with 59 fraternities and 38 sororities on campus. In 2004, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said his company hired more graduates from the U of I than any other university in the world. There are 24 residence halls on campus. I moved into sparkling new Forbes Hall when it opened in 1958. Tour the campus, walk the Main Quad from the Illini Union to Foellinger Auditorium, marvel at the dome-shaped State Farm Center opened in 1963, the magnificent Memorial Stadium dedicated by the legendary Red Grange's five-touchdown performance against Michigan in 1924 and Morrow Plots, a National Historic Landmark established in 1876, the oldest experimental agriculture field in the United States and second oldest in the world. Visit the Krannert Center for Performing Arts, the Krannert Art Museum, Kinkead Pavilion and Spurlock Museum. This is a university that has produced 30 Nobel laureates and 27 Pulitzer Prize winners. It ranks as the No. 20 university in the world. Afterward, take a break at one of the saloons on Green Street in Campustown and learn why the U of I ranks as the No. 1 party school in the United States. Who said college was all work and no play?

I took my daughter here to see the campus. We walked around quite a bit and really liked it. She moved it up on her list.

We loved this trip down memory lane! My husband was a student at the University of Illinois (I went to Indiana University).
We walked around campus. We saw the quad, strolled into the Union, paused by Altgeld Hall (it was locked, but very impressive) and took photos by the Alma Mater.
We walked around outside my husband’s old fraternity.
There was lots of construction and streets and sidewalks were torn up. The university is old and it’s upkeep and new construction is important.
Find a place and park your car then walk through campus. Driving around campus is impossible.
We plan to visit again next year. Hopefully the Covid will be over and campus life will be back to normal.

I emailed the assistants at the University of Illinois in Urbana/Champaign and asked if there were scholarships for me, there were not. And it is so everywhere else in the United States. SO, I decided to study ONLINE abroad until I move out of the states. Classes are online now so there is no difference, especially to the education. I recommend taking classes in universities in MEXICO. The price does not compare and we can support ourselves doing so. Let us not enclose our opportunities!

As a local here, I suggest the following things for a one-day tour when you're in town: the Main Library, Altgeld Hall, Lincoln Hall, Morrow Plots, Smith Hall, the Main Quad, the Siebel Center, the Illini Union, the Alma Mater, the Japan House, and the round barns (if you have time).

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign isn't the prettiest campus in the country but visitors are struck by its history as they walk from one end to the other. Start in Campustown, which is centered on Green Street, west of Wright Street, which divides Champaign from Urbana and cuts through the heart of the campus. It covers eight city blocks and has changed dramatically over the last 10 years with the addition of new high rises, apartment buildings, small businesses, restaurants and bars. To get a flavor of student life, visit Kam's, the bar on Daniel Street that dates to the 1930s. See the 10-ton statue of Alma Mater at the corner of Wright and Green, then visit the nearby Illini Union, the hub of student activity. From there, cross Green Street to the north and marvel at the new and emerging Engineering Campus, including the Grainger Engineering Library and historic Boneyard Creek. Return to the Illini Union and walk south along the Main Quadrangle, the main artery on campus, which is surrounded by many historic buildings, including Altgeld Hall, Lincoln Hall, Harker Hall, Foellinger Auditorium, Noyes Laboratory and Gregory Hall. At the south end of the Main Quad, visit the Main Library, the second largest university library in the country next to Harvard. Nearby are the history Morrow Plots, an agricultural experimental plot of land dating to the 1870s. Walk west to The Armory, once the largest indoor facility in the country, then walk across the street to Huff Hall, once known as the finest basketball arena in the country. A block south is Memorial Stadium, made famous by Red Grange's five-touchdown homecoming performance at the structure's dedication ceremony in 1924. Across the street is the State Farm Center, an architectural masterpiece designed by U of I alum Max Abramowitz that was opened in 1963 and formerly called Assembly Hall. It's a world-class university, a leader in research and teaching and public engagement, and a tour of the campus is an educational experience for any visitor.

Surprised that almost 50,000 students attend this campus. Not nearly as scenic as my alma mater Madison, but still fun to walk around the center of campus and their huge grassy center square. Park at the student union at the metered parking (30 minute limit unfortunately), and check it out.
