We went on a cool, but sunny, autumn afternoon and loved it. The grounds were still lovely, even in fall, but the mansion was incredible! It was definitely worth the price of the tour ($8 each) to see inside the mansion (all 3 floors and the basement) and to hear all the background. We had a great tour guide who explained all kinds of details about the design, artifacts, and functions of the rooms and the pieces in them. Note that you cannot touch pretty much anything inside the mansion, so it's beautiful to see, but the tour would probably be tough for younger kids.

this is worth seeing..the style both inside and out is unusual for the time and the guides really know the history even down to the odd little details like the double spiral staircase being ceilinged off for a spell to avoid using the upper floors. It is a nice drive, right in town in a quiet residential area and has other house around it of historical interest as well. The house itself, from an opulence stand point is not all that special. The ground floor wood work is ornate but not over the top, the stained glass is nice but there are better examples in chicago on Navy pier, the furniture is period correct but not always original to the house. The interesting part is in the story from the guides and the history of the house and land. Take note of the double spiral stairs and the upper floor cistern. Also take in the museum...it has a very interesting early electric car and history of the area, house, and barbed wire industry.

We enjoyed a personalized tour on a Tuesday afternoon as we were the only ones there. The docent was excellent! She had so much interesting information and was able to answer all of our questions. This house has a lot of history and is an amazing find in DeKalb.

Great docent took 2 of us on a tour as we were the only 2 at the museum that afternoon. Great knowledge and just the right pace as we walked through and saw how the 1% lived in the last century. It was fun, and we recommend it. Looks like a movie spook house from the outside, but the vibe inside is a practical rich family with parenting problems to solve like the rest of us.

What a wonderful history of barb wire. You are allowed to take pictures of the outside of the buildings and even inside the visitors center museum, but no photo's inside the home and I can see why. It is spectacular.

If the smell of streets filled with horse manure and risk of fire were on your mind, why not build your mansion and manufacturing plants out in Dekalb. Inside the Visitors Center is the museum where you can acquire an appreciation for the family history, their cars, interests and, of course, barb wire.

We then took the 1:00 p.m. Guided Mansion Tour and for an additional $5 added the first floor of the Ellwood-Nehring House. Prepare to be blown away upon entering through the front door with all the wood carvings and leaded glass. The entry makes a statement for any guest with its painted stenciled ceiling like a necklace on a fine lady with a view of the curved grand staircase in the distance. The first floor is magnificent and has many original furnishings and paintings. Living large in this home in 1879 meant gas lighting, bathrooms and central heat. Our passionate tour guide, Mary, was wonderful. To be able to visit all 3 floors and the basement with the large original “icebox”, wine cellar and laundry facilities is a real treat. It’s hard to imagine Teddy Roosevelt visiting this remote home, but there was a railroad with service from Chicago.

Another delight was popping in the “dollhouse”. My petite 5"3" was the perfect size for this (pardon the pun) short tour. Intern Kendall escorted us to the Ellwood-Nehring Mansion and conveyed its history and beauty. Plus she taught me how to use a sundial in the nearby garden. I hope she does make a visitor‘s map (perhaps with a CD and/or mp3) of other beautiful older homes in the area including the family gravesites in the nearby cemetery (hint, hint).

Expressways make it an easy trip (1 hr. 15 min. from the southeast Chicago suburbs).
Note: The Ellwood House is not air conditioned so during hot summer months not all floors may be opened for touring. Call ahead to check.

The staff at the visitor center and the tour staff really make the history of DeKalb and the story of the creation of barbed wire come to life. It makes it easy to understand how the creation of barbed wire, a truly American invention changed America and the world!

The Ellwood House, with its signature mansard roof, Gothic columns, pitched gables and cast iron roof cresting with a trefoil design, was built as a private home by barbed wire entrepreneur Isaac Ellwood in 1879. Located at 509 North First Street in DeKalb, Illinois, the three-story Victorian, Georgian and Colonial Revival style brick mansion was originally part of a 1,000-acre estate that included a large stable complex, a 50-foot-tall water tower, carriage house, Museum House and Little House, a playhouse for the Ellwood family's children. Ellwood, along with fellow DeKalb residents Joseph Glidden and Jacob Haish, are credited with developing the two-strand twisted barbed wire. Ellwood played a major role in organizing the barbed wire industry into a viable and profitable business. At one time, he owned 395,000 acres of Texas ranch land. In 1964, the home, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, was donated to the City of DeKalb and converted into a museum. It has a visitor's center, barbed wire gallery, carriage gallery and gift shop. The grounds and house are open for tours, allowing visitors to glimpse at what life was like for the Ellwoods. Isaac Ellwood loved to entertain prominent guests, including Theodore Roosevelt, at lavish dinner parties.

Spent a couple hours here learning of local history. Museum was very informative and through. Wish we could have spent more time there! The house tour was very well done - personal and engaging.
