This is a photo of my parents cript at Mt. Hope Mausoleum in Champaign, IL - it has looked like this for over 2 years with the excuse that they are waiting on marble to match. I've got news for them the contact paper does not match the marble on the other cripts. I don't know what happened to the original marble, but with the damaged tiles it was probably water related. I've spoken to the mausoleum manager, she's been helpful but the company that owns this and probably many other cemeteries/mausoleums around the state just doesn't care. I urge everyone to check on your loved ones final resting places whenever possible! Maybe the only way to get the out-of-town company to pay attention to this problem is to put it on as many social media sites as possible. The manager did pass on my phone number to the "home office" but I still haven't heard from them.

Not many Universities have a large (= 52 acres) cemetery "on campus," but the University of Illinois does. Mount Hope was incorporated in 1856. With the founding of the University of Illinois 11 years later in 1867, I'm sure that the developers of Mount Hope never imagined that it would be surrounded on all four sides by an educational institution.

As a student at the University of Illinois from 1958 to 1962, I recall the image of Mount Hope Cemetery in the shadow of two of the campus icons, to the south of Huff Gym and to the east of Memorial Stadium. Located at 611 East Pennsylvania Avenue, on the southern edge of the campus, straddling the border between Champaign and Urbana, Mount Hope began interment in 1856, 11 years before the university opened its doors. Walking through the cemetery, which covers 52 acres between Pennsylvania and Florida Avenues, visitors see over 150 years of local history reflected in the names and designs on the grave markers...pioneer families such as Busey and Cunningham, legendary coaches Bob Zuppke and George Huff and veterans from the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II. The Civil War section is marked by a flagpole and a 32-pound seacoast defense cannon. There also is a potters field where the poor, unknown, criminals and suicide victims were buried. And there are gravestones of immigrants who did not adapt well to life in a new land. One tombstone reads: "A Stranger in a Strange Land."

If you enjoy wandering through cemeteries, Mount Hope is a nice place to spend time. I love many of the older monuments, and could spend hours walking around and reading the information on tombstones. The mausoleum is nice... I have visited there and also attended services there. As far as I know, Mount Hope is well maintained.
