Celebration of Mining
Okt. 2021 • Paare
What this museum lacks in visitor facilities, it makes up for with the friendly and knowledgeable people running it. Also, to see, hear and smell the huge winding engine at work is an experience not to be missed. This place deserves the financial and moral support of lots of visitors if they are realise their dream of developing a first class visitor attraction that truly celebrates the importance of the Lancashire mining industry. I'm only sorry I missed the demonstration of working mining railway locomotives but I will certainly look out for future steaming days.

Some of the best exhibits are the volunteer staff.
Sep. 2021
I spent a half day at the Museum, I saw the Headgear, Winding House and was impressed with the biggest working steam winding engine in Europe, miners cottage, Fred Dibner's mine head gear, that he built in his back garden, a good collection of small ancillary steam engines, many, including the winding engine, working and powered by compressed air, the inside of a miners back to back cottage, the Steam Locomotive and train were not working that day, BUT the place is staffed by friendly knowledgeable volunteers, The Star of which is Stewart who is tucked away in the Lamp Room, Do Not miss visiting Stewart, he is a real collier and has many many stories to tell about his life underground and his personal experiences during the 1984 miners strike which are almost identical to stories told my other miners and police personnel that I have spoken to about the subject. It was a real pleasure meeting this gentleman.

Hidden Gem

Went as a group of four. Second time for three of us. Our friend, was a first time visit, ex miner who worked at Cronton until it closed. He explained what was what to us, fascinating.
This is run by brilliant volunteers and has come so far from our original visit.
Well done guys 👏👏
Great museum with some brilliant exhibitis. Take a peek inside the miners house
Free entry, but remember to leave a donation. Please make sure you have cash as the card operator was off sick (maybe more need to be trained up to use it?). Toilet facilities on site, small gift shop and serve refreshments. Great for families, but would say with children above 5.
Little train operates on a Sunday and check the website if you want to see the engine in operation.

Eee it were champion
Mai 2021
This place is brilliant. Before I went I told my wife that it looks great, but I would expect that "20 minutes or so would do it". That all seems a bit naive now. I was there about 2 and a half hours and had to tear myself away.

The exhibits are fantastic. The pit headgear, enormous steam engine, various smaller engines, mini-museum, Fred Dibnah's pit headgear, recreation of a cottage, lamp workshop - and I'm sure much more. All fascinating.

But what really sets this place apart is the people who work there. Everyone made time for me, made me feel very welcome and showed endless patience, even when I described the pit headgear as "the big wheel thing" - I saw him wince, but he took it like a man.

The headgear is huge and the engine that powered it is a thing of industrial beauty on an enormous scale. But all of this diminishes next to the stature of those that work on it, and welcomed me to it. I am very grateful to all of the volunteers working there who made my visit so memorable. The chap who made me a cup of tea, Tim in the lamp workshop and many others. But most of all the brilliant lady in the cottage who spent ages with me, dressed me up in period costume, took my photo with my temperamental camera, introduced me to her husband and made me feel like an old friend.

Writing this out now is making me want to visit again as soon as I can. You should too.

Eee it were champion!

Great little gem of a museum
Okt. 2020
Spent a couple of hours this afternoon visiting this little gem in Astley. Welcoming, friendly volunteers who were very knowledgeable and eager to impart information about the site. Really enjoyed it and was lucky to see the mine engine working. Largest in Europe,

Thank you for your positive review. The volunteers work so hard to try and make visits interesting to folk. If you follow us on Facebook and Twitter you’ll see more of the events we hold and the story of our part in the industrial engine house of the north.

Interesting insight into mining over the last century
Aug. 2020 • Familie
A great place to visit for young and old alike! The engine house, learning area and old miner's cottage hold a fascinating insight into how miners operated and lived over the last century and the volunteers work hard to maintain and restore what is now one of the only remaining pit heads in Europe.
Would highly recommend spending at least an afternoon checking the place out and enjoying refreshments in the gazebo (which is currently being used in these social distancing/covid times).
5/5 😊❤

Thank you for such a positive review, glad you enjoyed your visit ... hopefully you’ll come back again, even if just to stretch your legs and have a cup of tea. As you say all the work is done by volunteers, many still balancing day jobs too. We’re always trying to create new things to see, so in future we’ll have an outside walk-through underground mining experience. We’re also just completing our little Tally Shop to try and fundraise to keep our museum running and you’ve been in our Mine of Information research room too. Best wishes. #Heritage4Generations

Relaxed, very interesting and super afternoon tea

What a lovely afternoon we had at the lancashire Mining Museum. We were there for a partnership reception hosted in a prettily decorated marquee. We were served drinks at outside tables with umbrellas by the most pleasant of volunteers. The afternoon tea was delicious, the tables beautifully set and the setting, amidst the mine buildings and artifacts , was unusual and very pleasant. Everyone is to be congratulated for providing such a lovely reception.
