As the sports editor of The Daily Illini, the University of Illinois' student newspaper, I covered the last basketball game played at Huff Gymnasium, Decatur's dramatic 49-48 victory over favored Chicago Carver and Cazzie Russell in the 1962 state high school championship. Built in 1925, it was named after George Huff, who was Illinois' athletic director from 1895 to 1935. Recognized as one of the nation's greatest basketball facilities at the time, it hosted the state high school basketball tournament from 1926 to 1962 and hosted the Illinois basketball team from 1925 to 1962. In those days, crowds of 7,000 regularly attended the games. From 1927 to 2002, the facility at 1206 South 4th Street also was home to a 25-yard swimming pool which served Illinois' swimming team, water polo club and underwater hockey club. Today, it is named Huff Hall and it has been converted into a 4,050-seat multi-purpose arena that hosts men's wrestling, women's volleyball and men's and women's gymnastics. At each event, banners are hung of past Illini heroes to remind the crowd of the school's rich tradition in athletics.

When it opened in 1925 on the University of Illinois' campus in Urbana-Champaign, George Huff Gymnasium, as it was called at the time, was described as "the greatest gym in the country," a facility unlike any other, the Yankee Stadium of the college realm. Located at 1206 South 4th Street in the heart of the campus, it was named after George Huff, who was the school's athletic director from 1895 to 1935. Until 1963, when the Assembly Hall opened, Huff Gym hosted the Illinois men's basketball team. It also hosted the state high school boys basketball tournament from 1926 to 1962 and the Illinois women's basketball team from the 1970s through the mid-1990s. Originally, Huff Gym had a seating capacity of about 7,000 people. Today, converted to host Illinois' volleyball and wrestling teams, as well as men's and women's gymnastics, Huff Gym is a 4,050-seat multi-purpose arena. At each athletic event, banners are hung to remind visitors of past Illini heroes and the rich tradition that Illinois athletics have had. As a college and professional newspaper sportswriter, I recall covering high school and college basketball games at Huff Gym. And I covered an exhibition by the Russian Olympic gymnastics team in 1960. It was an intimate and exciting environment, a time when high school basketball players wore their varsity letter jackets to the state finals. Did you know that the Illinois men's basketball team won nearly 82 percent of its games in 38 years at Huff Gym? How's that for a home court advantage?

As a student at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign from 1958 to 1962, I spent a lot of time at old Huff Gym watching and covering Illini basketball games and the state high school basketball tournament and then participating in intramural games on the same floor. It opened in 1925 and was known as Huff Gym until the 1990s. It was named after George Huff, who was Illinois' athletic director from 1895 to 1935. When the Assembly Hall (now State Farm Center) opened in 1963, Huff Gym became Huff Hall and was converted into a 4,050-seat multi-purpose arena. Today, it is home to Illinois' women's volleyball team, the men's and women's gymnastics teams and the wrestling team. Major renovations took place in 1992 and 2002. The building was home to Illinois' swimming team from 1927 to 2002 and also was home to Illinois' women's basketball team from the 1970s to 1997. The fencing team worked out and conducted meets on the third floor. Today, Huff Hall houses a training room, a weight room, equipment rooms and locker rooms in the basement as well as many academic offices and classrooms on the first, second and third floors. Located in the heart of the campus, across the street from the Armory, the historical building was the site of the first live televised state high school basketball tournament in 1952. The Illinois High School Association coined the name "March Madness" to describe its signature event in March. The name later was picked up by the NCAA for its postseason tournament. Illini basketball teams won 81 percent of their games and eight Big Ten championships at Huff Gym. One-time Ohio State coach Fred Taylor said his teams were so intimidated by the facility (the students and fans were so close to the floor that their feet often straddled the out-of-bounds line) that "we haven't won here since the Civil War." In 1959, Huff Gym attracted over 6,000 people for a gymnastics exhibition between an Illinois squad featuring 1958 Olympians Abie Grossfeld and Don Tonry and Urbana high school gymnast Hal Holmes and the Russian men's and women's Olympic teams, which had won gold medals in the 1958 Olympics.
