My husband and I hiked up to Hanging Lake on Sun, Nov 5th, starting at 8:45am. And we took the additional 200 yards up to Spouting Rock Falls, which is so worth it! The hike is 3.3 miles round trip from the parking lot and took us 2 hours, with a 15 min stop at the Lake & SR. We made the required reservation online prior to arriving, which was checked by a ranger at his post by the parking lot. As it states on the website, you can only access the trailhead by driving eastbound on I70, which was fine for us because we were staying in Glenwood Springs.
We were dressed in layers for the 43* temps, and even though we did get warm sometimes, we only took off our beanies & gloves a couple times, as the hike is still in the shade most of the way. It had snowed a week before but what little ice/snow there was was packed down, so it wasn't slippery - we didn't need the microspikes or hiking poles we had brought. It's a steady hike uphill for a mile, following the creek. I don't think I'd want to do this hike when there's ice or snow - some steps/rocks are steep so I can imagine the trail being slippery, going up and down, even with the help of poles & wearing the right footwear. There is a handrail at the steepest, rocky portion right before getting to the lake, which you definitely use to get yourself down safely.
We'd like to come back to do this hike in warmer weather. The water is truly a beautiful turquoise color, even off-season! There's no swimming or wading in the lake (a nice boardwalk allows you to walk the perimeter) but one can stand under the upper waterfalls to cool off :-)
The trail has hard, steep portions, but anyone can hike this, just take your time.

First, awesome!! Do it. Second I am not a fan of paying for a hike, especially the same price for my kids, 48$ seemed crazy but we had to do it. So worth it and after seeing the trail and the beautiful work up there I guess I understand the cost a little better. I’ve seen a lot of waterfalls all over and this is very unique and well worth the hike! My kids , 5&6 loved it, loved counting fish, loved the waterfall and we got some amazing pictures! The hike is somewhat tough up and down but the trail is great and the views of the canyon walls are incredible, as are the bridges crisscrossing the stream. We loved it and I wouldn’t hesitate on this one!

Must make online reservations, because there is limited parking. There are a lot of times available. They employees are so kind and helpful. One of the most strenuous hikes I’ve done, but well worth it. 1 1/2 miles took 3 hours with such beauty along the way. A deer was resting to the side of the trail. Everyone on the trail was friendly and courteous.
I highly recommend this for those in good shape.

Steep hike but manageable, start as early as possible in the summer, and bring lots of water. Loved the reservation system and super friendly rangers. Our 7 year old bounded up the trail (counting the bridges helped with motivation, and gummy worms). Don't miss the waterfall, it was great for cooling down. As a Colorado resident I usually wear sneakers for a typical hike, but I was happy that I wore actual hiking shoes and brought poles for this one because of the rocks. Apply sunscreen and enjoy!!

We really enjoyed our hike! It was totally worth the climb. I loved the reservation system as the trail was not too crowed to enjoy it. Well marked and maintained.

The hike was around 2 hours long for our party of 7, including 2 teens and an 8 year old. The hike was difficult in the sense that the elevation gain was quite steep, but there was no intense rock climbing that was necessary. There is quite a bit of shade on the trail, and the views are absolutely stunning. There is also a waterfall called spouting rock that I totally recommend visiting with hanging lake, they are very close together. The cool mist was great for the hot day of hiking too! Definitely recommend this destination.

This is one of our favorite hikes and we've been here several times. They did a fantastic job rebuilding the trail and I actually love that they do a reservation system now, so that it's not too crowded. I also love that they put up signs and ropes to keep people out of the water so that it stays beautiful for everyone. Aaaaand I love dogs, but I love that no dogs are allowed on this hike...again, to keep the place beautiful. And beautiful it is! The hike is well shaded and has lots of small waterfalls and greenery around. Some of it looks magical, like a fairy land or something. The water in the lake is a beautiful blue/green shade and you can see right through it. Definitely make the extra effort to hike up to spouting rock, too. Bring plenty of water - it's not a super easy hike - and wear good shoes. Be respectful of the land and enjoy yourself - it's gorgeous!

Like so many beautiful spots that got overwhelmed and spoiled by too many people , the hike to Hanging Lake is by reservation only. However if you are doing your research you will be well informed about this fact. We were hiking the middle of May and the reservations opened up the 1st of May. Perhaps because I was at the beginning of the season I had no problem being able to easily pick date and time. Since we were coming from Florida I gave ourselves a few days to acclimate to the altitude before choosing this hike. Even though temperatures were mild mid May and most of the hike is in the shade I am glad we started our hike around 915. I am 60, moderately active but not fit , based at sea level so I knew this hike would be challenging. This hike proved to be much more challenging for my husband who has a bad knee. Although this hike has an elevation change of 1000 feet in 1.2 miles there were sections of the trail that were level and provided some respite from the steady up hill trend. You start right off climbing- lots of rocks. Personally I find myself much less winded climbing rocks than steps or switch backs. But rocks are a killer if you have orthopedic issues. The path is well marked with mileage markers every quarter mile so you that will keep you incentivized . The hike also has seven bridges- another way to keep track of your progress. Typically around the bridges the area levels out and you are walking through the woods following the creek. The final ascent is quite steep with railings. That part ultimately did my husband's knee in. I reached the end goal - stunning views of Hanging Lake. It was not much further to hike up to Spouting rock the water fall above the lake that you can even walk behind. Come prepared with good shoes, water and hiking sticks ( especially appreciated on the downward trek). Even for those of us who can't bound up and down this trail like mountain goats the whole hike time was three hours as recommended. It is is a hike well worth challenging yourself with.

The pictures of Hanging Lake that you see online don’t do this place justice. This hike was an incredibly beautiful hike, from start to finish. You can tell that the Grizzly Creek fire of 2020 took out some of the trees in the canyon, but fortunately, Hanging Lake was spared. It was a challenging hike for me. It was very rocky and gained a lot of elevation in a short amount of distance. I wouldn’t recommend hiking this trail with children under 12.

After hiking to Hanging Lake, don’t forget to hike to Spouting Rock. It’s the waterfall that flows into Hanging Lake. It’s well worth the extra 10 minutes to hike to!
