Maybe we did not go the the right place but we checked out the locations for the “south dike” and “catfish bay” and expected to find an awesome hike, but we did not. More of a graded flat road with a pretty average to poor view.

Pretty stretch of the Colorado which starts somewhere just north of Needles and goes south to just north of Lake Havasu City. Neat fishing spots along gravel and dirt access roads off of the 95. Check out the Topock area just above the I-40 access or a bit farther north at Catfish Paradise. Folks at the general store might be helpful in suggesting other entry locations. Fishing can be fun here. But for touring around, you'll be better off just looking for a good viewpoint. For me, I found the Mesquite Bay area near Lake Havasu more to my liking. There're about 3 identifiable access points, with two fishing piers, kayak access, and walking trails. Good place for dog walking, too, though it's federal land so they should be leashed. The northern most parking area is the best developed, but all the drive-ins are really short roadways. No worries for flats or extra tire wear. But I wouldn't choose a windy day to be here. The lake gets rough and you'll find few barriers to block the wind. The three entries are bunched together along London Bridge Road.

Be very very quiet, or all the animals will go away. Bring your binoculars and camera for some great pictures. Bring some galoshes if you want to wade in the water and get some really cool pictures

You'll find some interesting things if you just take the time to take a few off the beaten path roads... Havasu National Wildlife Refuge is a whole lotta water in the desert and "Catfish Landing" is just a nice place to rest. Nestled just south of Interstate 40 in Arizona just before the California State line and along the Colorado River. People say there is some good fishing here.

Not sure why it's listed under Needles, except that maybe there are two areas that are considered Havasu National Wildlife Refuge. We visited the one located on the northern outskirts of LHC on a sunny afternoon in January. There were a number of signs that there had recently been wild donkeys in the area, and we found a few waterfowl in the area, but there wasn't too much. Nice stop to walk the dog and explore a bit more of the Havasu region. Nothing too substantial or too exciting, but a nice little bit of nature.

We traveled here from Lake Havasu after looking at the web site. Once we arrived, we found extremely poor signage/directions, and several closed roads/trails. Beautiful place for the morning pics that I was taking, but overall disappointing.

If you go early you will see and or hear lots of birds and wildlife, including Beaver if you are lucky. You may not see them but you will hear their tail slappings as they become aware of you. You can launch at Castle Rock and go up or down river/lake or you can launch at the non motorized Mesquite Bay area about 4.5 miles down river/lake. Current is nill so you can paddle up or down or whatever you like. No motors allowed in these waters. Nice paddle.

My wife and I traveled here in March and found this wildlife haven. This NWR is located in extreme western Arizona near the town of Needles, CA. It was established to provide migratory bird habitat. We drove and hiked to see birds and we enjoyed the nice visitor/interpretation center. The refuge offers many other things to do like kayaking/canoeing, hunting, many photographic opportunities, boating and fishing. Bring your family (including children), water, binoculars, camera and enjoy what this part of western Arizona has to offer.

We visit National Wildlife Refuges everywhere we go, with the primary purpose of birding.
To begin with it was really difficult to figure out where to access this refuge and what it offers. The web site is sparse and the only map offered is small.
We arrives from the California side and made our way down the west side of the refuge. The only stop available on that side is a small overlook of Beal Lake. We saw a couple of ducks there and found out that the only road available to cross to the other dies of the refuge was closed to the public.
So we backtracked out and when around the north end to access the east side sites. The North Dike fishing area offered the best birding with a good variety of waterfowl in the shallow lakes and ponds in that area.
The Five Mile Landing Day Use area also offered some birds that could be seen from the shoreline around the boat ramp.
The remaining sites on the east side were primarily boat launches or fishing sites with little wildlife to offer.
Overall there is limited access to good wildlife areas, only a couple of interpretive panels, and virtually no additional information available. As National Wildlife Refuges go this one is pretty bare bones.

The scenery is beautiful in this trip best viewed from the river. On the day we went we saw lots of prickly pear cactus in bloom and some wild burros. We also saw birds and wonderful rock formations.

can one get to the topack gorge by car? if not, how long is the hike?

Not by car and I have not heard of anyone that has hiked it. Does not mean someone hasn't but it is not a hike that is commonly spoken of. Do not know of any trails that lead there from either side. It would not be a good choice for hiking in the warmer months. Once again not sure how long or if anyone does or has.
