Our Cruise stopped at Montevideo and Punta Del Este. Instead of taking the expensive Cruise tours we were able to find English speaking guides with an air conditioned van to take us around for 3 hours in each city at a most reasonable rate, which worked out to US$20-25 per person for our group of 8.

Sergio in Montevideo has lived and worked in New York and has a great sense of humour. rsergio116@yahoo.com

Eugenia Malinov in Punta Del Este showed us why the city is such a wonderful place for the rich to vacation and retire. e.e.malina@gmail.com.

The Montevideo City Tour was interesting but not exceptional. We were told that since it was their Summertime the city was deserted compared to what it usually was. It was not crowded, but having never been there before I had nothing to compare it to. The capital building was nice from both front and back. There were several unique buildings we could see from there. The “Wagon Train” sculpture was interesting but I did not understand its significance. The beaches looked crowded but tempting. I liked the fact that we were told the wife of the president was trying to get the people to spend more time at Christmas thinking about Jesus than Santa Clause. I agree with her, I also liked that they stayed in their own house. The main square was nice with the converted hotel and the equestrian statue. The buildings around it were nice too. The alchemists house was both unusual and strange. In all it was a city tour that showed us a lot about the city. It was interesting to hear about the history and obsession with soccer as well.

Good Guide who could speak Portuguese, English and Spanish virtually all the time. Very interesting and worth the US$28.

So I made it all around Argentina, Chile and Brazil, and without being lifted, rolled, or conned, only to get to Montevideo and get mugged. How is it that could take the mighty Londoner, you ask? It was not a group in hoodies, it was a light fingered local, or even the quick slight of hand of a taxi driver. No I was rolled by a woman behind a counter armed with nothing more than the official exchange rate for Uruguay.

The official rates between Ar and Ur pesos in buying 1.30 (outrageous) selling 2.40(about right). What this means is that I handed the woman AR80 and she gave me UR102 or so, sound a lot, except that you can not buy four bottles of water with that. If I was to buy nothing and simply hand back the money to the same woman for exchange, she would have given me AR35.

I was talking to my driver about this today and was told that an ice cream in Argentina would cost AR45, that same ice cream would cost UR300.

My trip to Uruguay was probably the most expensive stamp on my passport. The ferry cost me AU400 and the city was different, but not unique. I read a review that said that one day was not enough and one had to stay overnight. I shall be checking whether this was written by the Uruguay tourist board.

The city is small and an easy walk for the day. I was tired after a 05.30 start and managed to have two sleeps in the park and still see all the sights. Probably two of the most expensive sleeps that I have ever taken.

Having said that, I did see more black people in Montevideo just going about there business in one day that my entire twelve day trip. Apparently Uruguay was created by Brazil as a buffer between Brazil and Argentina, before Uruguay fought for their independence. This might explain why in Montevideo, like in Brazil, there is a large and prominent black population.

By 17.30 I was looking for things to do and went to a grill house in a market. I asked for medium, and the cow came out, sat on my plate and offered me a knife and fork. Next time I will as for well done...it was nice though.

There is a tradition in Buenos Airs and Montevideo of ripping the pages out of your desk diary and throwing them out your office window on the last working day of the year. I saw this happening in Montevideo, and by the time I got back to Buenos Airs, the streets were littered with shredded and unshredded pages of peoples office lives.

We spent the day in Montevideo recently, as a port of call on our cruise. We initially planned to visit all the key sites ourselves on foot. It is quite a compact city but, after going to the tourist info, we quickly realised that we'd have to walk a long way and get some local transport to see everything. At that point, Sergio popped up and offered a city tour in his air conditioned minibus (plus free Wi-Fi) for 20 dollars. We were initially a bit sceptical but decided to go ahead and we're so pleased we did. Sergio is a delightful person - knowledgeable, funny, and spoke excellent English having lived in the US for 5 years. He was also keen to ensure that we saw everything we wanted to, and didn't worry about overrunning. He also seemed to know everyone in the city! We'd highly recommend his tour to anyone visiting the city - you couldn't have done more or seen more in the time, and we learnt so much more about the city and what it's like to live there than we ever could have got from our guide book.

We thought we would see another country while vacationing in Buenos Aires, Argentina so we signed up for a day trip to Montevideo, Uruguay. The bus ride and ferry was comfortable but it was the opposite afterwards. When we got to Montevideo, our tour guide, Bridgitt, was waiting for us. She led us to her red car, a Hyundai Accent. We were a little disappointed as we were expecting an SUV (there were 3 of us). It started quite okay as it was about 11am and little cool and windy. We tried to enjoy our tour around Montevideo though we struggled to understand Bridgitt who was speaking rather unclear broken English with her accent and pronunciations. As the day went on, it became very hot and we asked for full blast of her AC. Unfortunately her old car was weak of AC and we had to turn all windows down. The noise from traffic outside was very loud and we couldn't hear her from the back seat. Her car engine also made loud noises. We ended up sitting in a hot oven for about 6 hours and actually were relieved when the tour ended and she took us to the ferry. Her dress code was very unprofessional, actually shabby, with shoe lace not tied and watch strap broken and hanging. During lunch, she even had the nerve to ask a very personal question (she asked my husband when I was in the bathroom) as to what we would cook for our dinners at home. What business was it of hers? Also, we suspected that she might have stolen my husband's glass case as we realized it was missing at the end of the tour.

The tour that we took, booked through Expedia was OK , but we would have been better of taking a small group tour, the coach we were in was big and the loading and unloading took for ever and as a result there were a limited the number of stops.
