Another DC gem that has been beautifully restored/maintained! This historic house has numerous artifacts to enjoy. The placards situated throughout the house are very interesting, informative, and shed light on DC in the late 1700’s to 1800’s. Nicely maintained grounds - very serene, peaceful despite being near downtown DC. Highly recommend spending a couple of hours here.

The gardens had been closed for a while but we popped in for a quick visit. It’s lovely that they are open during the day as a peaceful stop in the area.
We didn’t visit the house this time but I would like to come back.

We have lived in the DC area over 35 years and had never been here. What a beautiful house. We enjoyed walking through at our own pace and walking the grounds as well.

Le rez-de-chaussée contient de belles pièces meublées et le 1er étage est consacré à une exposition. C’est le siège d’une association qui ouvre ses portes également en location pour des événements privés. La demeure est entièrement climatisée et dispose d’un vaste ascenseur pour les personnes à mobilité réduite. Le jardin est charmant.

Dumbarton Oaks is nearby, but Dumbarton House is worth a visit. The house dates to the beginning of the federal government in Washington and was home to one of its first civil servants who worked in the Treasury Department under six presidents. How the early inhabitants of the Federal City, both free and enslaved, lived is described. Our guide did a great job during a 30 minute tour of the rooms.
Parking is just east of the house off 27th St. Don’t let the “no outlet” sign deter you.

Unfortunately, only 4 rooms are part of the guided tour here. There really isn't much history so we wasted our time and money. Skip this one.

Dumbarton House is a fabulous place. Given the unlimited supply of places to visit in DC, it may well not make it onto a short-time visitor's list. I've lived in nearby Maryland for decades and never got there. But the novel "Lincoln in the Bardo" got me to Oak Hill Cemetery, which got me to Dumbarton House. A nice, if spare, presentation of a solid Federalist house. If you've seen others, this may not add a lot to your knowledge. BUT. And a HUGE but: Dumbarton House is refreshingly honest about its past and its dependence on support from servants, indentured and free, and slaves. It would be a scandal to try to hide this fact in 2018 and in DC, but other places still do. So, bravo to the folks at Dumbarton House for including, even featuring, the fact that these rich Brits didn't just float on a magical layer of luxury, but that their comfort was built on the backs of help, free and slave. And it is clear that as more is learned about those who built and maintained that house, it will be announced honestly and forthrightly. Frankly, to me, this changed my whole attitude towards the house I was in: the truth was openly, frankly, calmly being told. There is not a huge amount to see at the house, but because of the honest and intelligent signage, there is a huge amount to be learned, absorbed, in the place that resulted from the combination of good and bad. The house embodies the complex relationship between money and labor. Again, congratulations to the enlightened folks who planned the presentation of the history of this fine house.

Very typical of the grand houses of the federal period. This is something of a living museum. You can have high tea here from time to time. As a museum the tour is very interesting and costs a modest $5. Outdoor garden was beautiful in June

Dumbarton House is one of the gems of Georgetown, DC, hosting various programs with mass appeal both educational and entertaining. This Tea was no exception. Starting with a lovely appetizing soup, guests were served at round tables covered in brightly colored tablecloths with sunny yellow napkins. The tier trays were heavily laden with several different types of delicious sandwiches. There was fresh garnish fruit and huge Blueberry Scones with condiments of Lemon Curd, Clotted Cream, and Jelly. The desserts were different tasty cookies and tangy lemon bars. Two different teas were served generously by the staff. Highly recommend Dumbarton House for their delicious teas!

The Dumbarton House is situated near the Dumbarton Bridge (northern end toward DuPont Circle). Based on the information, it is an example of the "Federal Style House" and was built and complete in 1800. It is currently list as National Register of Historic Places and two floors are designated as museum with collections and furniture of the period. The house is also overlooking the beautiful Oak Hill Cemetery. I suspect that the outdoor garden will be beautiful in Spring and Summer. Currently, it is the headquarters of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America (NSCDA) since 1928.

Hi Beau, thank you for the question. Dumbarton House is engaged in minor, although critical, renovation work. We are currently replacing the balustrade on our upper terrace. The work is the culmination of a year of engineering and architectural analysis of the structural integrity and aesthetic of the balustrade. The work will be completed by mid-April. We are not planning any additional exterior construction for the remainder of the spring of 2015. However, we will be installing new plantings this spring in the South Garden (front of the house) to enhance and continue our outside interpretive process. Please stop by and view the new plantings and balustrade.
