We didn’t really know what to expect based on the reviews so we took our chances at exploring the looking for secret doors experience and it was so worth it!! The place is a maze and museum of illusion all in one place. With a dash of an Elvis mansion feel to it. We’ve spent about an hour and I’m not even sure how much of the whole place we’ve seen. At some point we were not sure we’d ever get out! I’d def recommend visiting this place. I’m curious about other events they might have

What an incredible experience; it is really not a museum but an amazing collection of quirky collectors’items. This place provides mystery, entertainment, raises your curiosity and it is simply spectacular for people of all ages. It is a MUST DO and SEE in Washington DC to open up your horizons by being at a place that is completely out of the ordinary.

This was a great find for us!

We love to curiosity shop! Flea Markets, antique shops, yard sales are always an adventure for us.

This was perfect for us! The hidden doors and nooks were an amazing bonus!

The staff were extremely pleasant and made the visit even better!

Great memories filled the rooms and it also gave us a memory of DC that we will share with others!

I wasn't sure what to expect - I knew it was a collection of bizarre knick-knacks. Some of the other reviews described it as a hoarder explosion. I can sort of see that for some of the rooms, which seem a bit random. But once you're immersed in the museum for a little bit, many of the room themes start to become more apparent.

Once I found out about the history and the modus operandi of the museum, I was definitely impressed. The knick-knacks are primarily donations and visitors can buy any of them to help fund the museum. It's kind of ingenious, actually, and explains why many of the rooms don't have an entirely consistent theme - when you get a ton of random donations, there's not always an obvious place for them to go.

The big draw of the museum, though, is the hidden doors. Sometimes, they lead to new sections of the house; other times, they're little closets or crawl spaces. My family found about 14 of them, but apparently, there are a ton more. I'd return in the future just to try and find more of them.

Amazing ! Cant wait to go back and take my other daughter and my son in law !! Anyone who gave this place a bad review obviously didn't read any descriptions or reviews before going . I paid extra for an add on package scavenger hunt because I was worried my daughter would get bored.... so unnecessary! 20 mins into our visit , I forgot to look for the items because I was having so much fun without it . The music memorabilia was amazing! (Bought a rare vinyl and and old record player)
It does get a little overwhelming with all the "stuff" , but thats the point . To throw you off. It's a life size I Spy game. All the people who complained that they wanted "hints" , etc, wouldn't last 5 minutes in an escape room !! Easy does not = fun.
Loved it ❣️

Wife and I visited here on a weekday afternoon. The museum is comprised of 5 mansion buildings. It is big and has to be to house 100 rooms. There is only one door in and out. You are greeted by a guide and led into a room where you see an introductory video. Then you are off on your own to explore. Each room has a differently designed ceiling. It seems that every wall, every shelf, every table, every ledge is covered with pictures, knick knacks, guitars, dolls, antiques and supposedly everything is for sale. We were in these rooms exploring for 2-1/2 hours and could have stayed longer. We only found about 12 hidden doors but according to the guide that is above average. You go up and down staircases and across hallways. Yes you could get disoriented byt that is part of the adventure. We have been visiting Washington DC for more than 20 years because my brother lives in the district. We have seen many many DC sights but never knew that this museum was where it is for over 40 years. Ask people who have visited DC or live there and see how few know about this place. It is exciting and well worth visiting.

I guess I'm the outlier here--I found this place to be completely overwhelming and surprisingly anxiety-inducing. I'm not a super tidy neat freak, but walking through the endless floors and rooms and narrow staircases gave me such a feeling of discomfort and claustrophobia that I wanted to break out of one of the many doors labelled "do not open" and flee for fresh air.

Seriously, if you are a person who ever has dreams where you're in an unknown house trying to find your way through to some room or person, and the staircases just keep going deeper and deeper and turning in on themselves, and you lose track of where you are, and this is generally a nightmare scenario for you, then do not go to this place. (Just me? Okay.) Similarly, if you have OCD, steer clear.

I can see how this would be fun for some people. If you're into antiquing, thrifting, or nostalgia and are immune to sensory overload, exploring this jam-packed labyrinth could be enjoyable. My kid enjoyed finding some of the secret doors but wasn't super keen to stay that long. The staff was nice, but also it was sort of weird--you'd walk into a room and there'd be a staffer sitting there silently on a laptop in a corner, or like someone lounging on a couch in a bedroom. The vibe to me was weird and uncomfortable.

Also, I don't think this qualifies as a museum--more like a historic place of interest. It's cool that Rosa Parks lived there, and they have some neat guitars. Just know what you're getting into, and know thyself. This place is not for everyone.

I cannot wrap my head around what kind of person would rate this amazing place negatively. I feel sad for them! Did they not visit the website to get an idea of what this mansion was like? Proceeds of admission go to help artists of all kinds! How can anyone complain about that?

This is an amazing, one-of-a-kind whimsical place! So much amazing history too! I honestly did not expect to spend 2 hours there. The mansion is a delightful place to explore. I have been to DC many times, yet never heard of the mansion until I was recently searching for fun things to do. I am so happy I discovered it. My teens loved it!

The employees were kind and very knowledgeable. I will be returning sometime to stay overnight. Something that utterly amazed me was how clean it was. I admit I looked for dust, lol but did not find any.

Thank you for a most enjoyable visit!

How did I not know about this place? Well, I do now, and it's a lot of fun, even though many of the exhibits might be labelled "a funny thing happened on the way to the landfill." Each of the rooms has a central theme, like "The Beatles," "Halloween," and so many others. The museum makes no effort whatsoever to display anything of true historical or artistic value, just "stuff" that, in many cases, is whimsical or laugh-out-oud funny. Searching for secret doors gives added incentive to go from one room to another, one floor to another. The kids we saw as we walked through were having an absolute blast. A fun way to invest two or two-plus hours.

I had an amazing time touring the secret doors. It was a lot of fun and very different. The secret doors are not easy to find so it was very exciting when I found the small ones. Made me feel smart :) since the average found is 3 and we found 13! I’ll be coming back to find more.
