Stunningly Beautiful
Juli 2021
We started out to do the longer of the two walks, but once we were into the longer part of the walk, it became steep and slippery. After a couple of mishaps, we decided these over 60's weren't well enough equipped to complete the walk. There had been an incredible amount of rain and I suspect in summer it would be a relatively easy walk when it was drier underfoot.
The man made lake is stunning and the landscape encircling it beautiful. We're told the lake is no longer blue, but it is stunning none the less.
The shorter version of the walk is relatively flat and easy no matter the weather.

This was a lovely walk to view the bluest natural pools! A quick dip added to the breathtaking colour of these pools! Work the trip!

Highly unusual landscape
Dez. 2020
A fascinating man-made lake surrounded by the vestiges of landscape changing gold-mining. There are good views from across the road from the Vulcan Hotel but if you feel a little more energetic there's a nice two kilometre circular walk. Definitely a highly unusual, and photogenic, landscape.

A Picturesque Town & Lake Hidden in the Countryside
Juli 2020
We drove past St. Bathans on our drive from Moeraki to Wanaka. Although the town is about 8km away from the main highway (Hills Creek), along a gravel road, it is worth the detour. It's a small village stuck in time, with it's blue lake surrounded by the mountains in the distance. The walk of 1.5 hour is a beautiful way to explore the place. There are shorted circuits, but if you have the time it's well worth the extra time, although it can be a bit muddy after heavy rain or snow. It was a cloudy day when we visited, so the lake wasn't all that Blue, but didn't take anything away from the beauty of the place. While Leaving St. Bathans if you take the road to Becks to meet the highway again, it is a sealed road in better condition.

A must visit in the South Island
Sep. 2019
We randomly detoured to St Bathans after seeing a road sign for the Blue Lake on our drive from Dunedin to Wanaka. About a 20 minute drive on gravel road this was one of the best stops we made on our trip! A very cute wee old gold mining town which has a beautiful Blue Lake. Give yourself the time and mkae the detour here!

A surprise

So lovely and unspoilt . Just drive down the hill and look and read about this place that suddenly had thousands of people arrive and then leave so all quiet again.

such a gorgeous little walk, full of history and culture - lovely pub at the end of the walk for a cold water, and a lovely little town of times gone by - so pleased we visited

Lovely view

Stopped at the lake after we had lunch at the hotel. Amazing view from the top!

We walked a wee way around it (even though the track is technically closed, naughty) but it was far too hot to continue.
Lovely to get away from the crowds of people at the end and get some photos with no one in them. The high white cliffs really don't show up properly in the photos!

Definitely stop in if you are in the area, but it will be super busy if it's warm (though great if you like a swim I suppose!).
