While on a cruise stop in Palermo we had about 6 hours to spend exploring the city. We chose a walking tour with Sergio and had a great time. He showed us so many places and was incredibly knowledgeable about all the sites and history. He talked about other tours where he spends days with clients and they sounded wonderful. We are happy to get a little taste of it this trip. We would highly recommend his services!

We spent 6 days with Sergio and we still didn't hear all his stories. He took us all over Sicily and saw many places and met many interesting people we would never have known about about without him. He met us at the airport in Palermo, took us to our hotel, then walked all over the town and to a fun place with traditional food and lots of locals for lunch. He drove us to the gorgeous cathedral at Monreale, then back to our hotel in Palermo.
The next morning he was right on time to pick us up, and drove out to see the ruins at Segesta, then the salt flats and a little boat trip pit to an island with Phoenician ruins, then a great lunch in Marsala. After lunch, Trapani and Erice, then back to Palermo in time for dinner.
The next day Agrigento and then to Menfi for a delicious private lunch outside in the vineyards of a family friend of Sergio's. Back to Palermo.
Day 4, packed up, and Sergio drove us to Cefalu, then a great lunch in a little place in the mountains, Anna the owner was a kick! He drove through the mountains to Randazzo on the side of Mt Etna, stopping for a herd of goats and soaking up incredible scenery. Sergio is a gutsy driver and his car has a powerful engine, 2 seconds is more than enough time for him to pass a semi truck on a mountain road. Not for the faint of heart.
Day 5 he took us to Taormina, lunch then a great winery tour back in Randazzo. We all stayed at a Agriturismo called Parco Statella, recommended by Sergio that was peaceful, comfortable and charming. And we had 2 great dinners there.
Day 6 Sergio drove us to Syracuse and dropped us at another of his great recommendations, a B & B called L'Approdo delle Sirene. We said a fond goodbye to Sergio.
He is a world traveler with some incredible stories, his English is good and he was always on time and dependable. He listened to us and designed our trip to what we were wanting to see and do, eat and drink. If you get him started on the political situation in Sicily, you are in for a real lesson, and his knowledge of the vast history of Sicily is amazing. Sergio is a licensed guide, and so got in free at all the museums and historical sites we visited. We really enjoyed him and heartily recommend his personal guide services.

The wisest choice I made on our recent Mediterranean cruise was to contract with Don Saro for his services on a guided tour from Palermo, Sicily, to two small villages in the countryside near the city. We chose our cruise itinerary because of Palermo. My husband’s grandparents emigrated from Sicily to the USA in the late 1800’s. Spending a day in Palermo was our opportunity to visit their home villages.

I read about Don Saro on TripAdvisor. He attended college & worked in London for several years, so he speaks fluent English. Don is not only an expert in the history, architecture & culture of Palermo & Sicily, he is also an expert in dealing with the government bureaucracy. It is easy to obtain birth records of ancestors in our own country, but it would be difficult to visit the town halls in Italy because we do not speak Italian. On TripAdvisor, I learned that Don had obtained these records for other clients who were visiting Sicily to learn more about their ancestral roots.

I emailed Don (info@personalguidesicily.com) & described the tour we desired. We wanted to explore family roots in Trabia, a seaside village, & Roccapalumba, a mountain village. Don responded with a tour proposal that exactly matched my vision. He also offered to contact the government offices in both villages to obtain records for us in advance of our visit. I did not even have to ask!

When we arrived in Palermo, Don’s rendezvous instructions were easy to follow. We took a short walk & met him just across the street from the port. We were on our way for a quick driving tour of the City of Palermo within the hour! Then we drove into the countryside of the Province of Palermo on our way to Roccapalumba. My husband was really pleased that Don was driving because he was able to enjoy the scenery instead of dealing with frantic traffic & unfamiliar geography. We also enjoyed learning more about Palermo around every bend. Don gifted us with a wealth of information.

After leaving the expressway, Don drove up a scenic winding mountain road & through several small villages on the way to Roccapalumba. In the car, Don had given me copies of documents that he had obtained from the government offices. Prior to this visit, I had found only a ship’s record that listed this village as the prior residence of my husband’s grandfather when he boarded the ship to sail to the U.S. In Roccapalumba, we visited the town hall, where we met the records personnel. They found birth records of my husband’s grandfather. Through the birth records, we were able to add great-grandparents’ names to the family tree!
We arrived in Roccapalumba during the weekly street market. We walked through the colorful market on our way to the parish church, where Don tried unsuccessfully to contact the village priest. Because the priest was away, we returned to the town hall; & Don persuaded the town manager to take us to the town visitors’ center & to the old church where the great-grandparents were married. This was a special treat! We walked through the village streets & up the mountainside to the huge granite rock from which the village gets its name—“Rock of the Doves.” There we discovered that the original small church had been nestled between two giant rocks & its location was now a shrine on the grounds of the church that replaced it. Because of Don, the town manager gave us a private tour of the grounds & the current church!

Our visit to Trabia was also an adventure, thanks to Don! The documents that Don gave me listed the address where my husband’s grandmother lived prior to her family’s emigration to the US. He found their street just inside the old town walls. As we started to walk up the cobblestone street, a couple appeared on their balcony. Don asked them if any family might still reside on the street, but the couple said no. They did direct us to a public balcony with a view of the old town wall, where we stopped for a moment before continuing our uphill trek. Because of Don, my husband walked the street of his ancestors!

Now that it was early afternoon, we were all hungry! When Don had stopped in the village, he inquired within a bakery to ask directions. He also asked about a nice restaurant for lunch. The bakery gave him the name of one of their clients. We enjoyed views of the sea on a short drive down the coastline to the restaurant. The food was delicious & very reasonably priced. At Don’s suggestion, we chose fresh seafood risotto & pasta dishes. Don was a delightful dining partner, & we enjoyed his company. The restaurant owner then surprised us with complimentary dessert from the bakery (again, thanks to Don!).

After lunch, we returned to the expressway to drive back to the Port of Palermo. Don had been mindful of our need to promptly return to the ship. He had also successfully filled our 8 hour excursion with once-in-a-lifetime memories. We have now experienced the municipalities & the geography of our ancestral roots. Thank you very, very much for a wonderful day, Don!

Sergio met us at the airport and escorted us to our hotel. The next morning we did a walking tour of Palermo in the morning and a visit to cathedral in Monreale and beach in the afternoon. The walking tour was very interesting, you could never research the history of Palermo in such depth. Sergio made it come alive. We visited churches, squares, buildings and a food market. We went to a great local restaurant for lunch and then onto Monreale to see the cathedral which is a must see. Sergio has a lovely engaging personality. He helped us with our tour route and advice on car hire. We even called in to see his delightful family which was a very nice personal touch. Sergio is the man to use.

Our hotel put us in touch with Rafaella Niccolini, a licensed guide in Palermo. She met us at our hotel at 10:00 AM the day after we had arrived in Palermo. The three of us set out for a walking tour that lasted about 3.5 hours. We enjoyed her company so much that we invited her to lunch, too. We walked to all the historic sites, visited churches and enjoyed the architecture and learning the history of this fascinating city. She was very well informed and spoke English beautifully as she had been an exchange student in the US.

My family (including my parents and my kids) spent a week in Sicily in February and had the foresight to book Don's services well before we arrived. Don met us at the airport on Sunday, took us to our apartment in Palermo, and provided door-to-door transportation Monday through Thursday. Transportation was charged fairly for my party of 6, and the vehicle was large enough for all of us plus luggage. This was a critical piece of the trip, because we did a *lot* of traveling.

Weeks prior to my trip, I contacted Don (partly because of his outstanding reputation here on TripAdvisor) and he provided several tour options and customized the itinerary based on my preferences, my party's size and age range. Brief rundown of the 4-day itinerary: day-long Palermo walking tour, Catacombs, Segesta, Marsala Salt Pans, Erice, Cefalu', Castelbuono, Parco Archeologico di Selinunte, and Castelvetrano.

Don has a ton of energy, and outlasted all of us every day. He picked us up, drove us to our tours (some were up to 2 hours away), showed us around, provided lunch recommendations, and drove us home. Every minute with Don was a learning experience. During the car rides, Don asked us what we wanted to get out of the trip, what our interests were, and when we were too tired to care (on the way home), he relayed very interesting stories about local politics, culture, customs, history, and how Sicily is really unique, even from mainland Italy.

If I did this trip over again, or go back to Sicily, would I hire Don?
Absolutely!

What would I change?
1. I would ask Don to take us to restaurants without glass on the table to make it easier to enjoy a meal without worrying about kids breaking stuff.
2. I would try to cut 1/2 day of tours out and do a winery tour or local wine tasting. Don suggested this before I arrived, but I wanted to see stuff. By the end of day 3, I was just ready to relax.

Don Saro was an absolutely wonderful tour guide and he went above and beyond to show us an incredible day in Sicily. We arrived on a cruise ship (MSC Preziosa) and Don was waiting for us when we got off the boat. He had exchanged emails with us ahead of time to find out what we wanted to do, so he already had a great plan. We packed in so many amazing things all in just a 6 hour tour.

Don's English is outstanding, and he was great with our children (ages 8 and 12). At lunch, when our daughter was getting a little whiny and tired, Don found paint sets at the restaurant and allowed our children to paint pictures while they waited on their food. This perked them right up.

Highlights included a city tour of Palermo, ancient fountains and churches, an incredible street market (Don bought us some incredible street food to try), a trip to an amazing canoli spot, lunch in an authentic local restaurant (far from the tourists), and even a trip to see the mummies of the capuchin monks.

Thanks again Don, we had a great time!

This city has many attractions, historical sites, amazing architectures, exellent food, Sightseeng on horse-drawn carriage is still exiting,At Mondello the nearby beach you can savor the fresh oysters and other fresh fish caught that morning. We stayed with family but there are a variety of places to stay.
