Friday the 3rd May we were walking around the Harbour area in Wexford Town. It was here we saw this impressive statue on Crescent Quay.
The staute pays tribute to Commodore John Barry, who was born in Tacumshane in County Wexford, on the 25th March 1745.
He died on the 13th September 1803, aged 58, in Philadelphia, USA and is buried in the grounds of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, in the City.
The staute depicts Barry standing in his full naval officer's uniform with his sword held in his hand and a ship’s anchor between his legs.
During his life he served as a naval officer and rose to the rank of Commodore, promoted to the rank by President George Washington in 1794.
He fought in the struggle for independence from Great Britain, he captained a number of ships during the war. He was the first American to capture an enemy ship
On the front and back of the plinth there is a disc bearing the Commodore's name. On the other sides, there are also plaques, one tells how the staute was given to Ireland by the USA, in 1956. The other gives a brief resume and history of Barry's naval career, most of the information detailed above.
Attached to the railings nearby which states " The National Society Sons of the American Revolution laid a wreath here on the 6th May 2014.
The Irish Mariners Memorial is also close by.

I discovered this little gem just over a year ago en-route to the Rosslare ferry to Bilbao. I do removals to Spain from Ireland and UK and from Europe back to Ireland. i arrived one Tuesday evening to find a traditional music session in full flow, squeezed my way to the bar and ordered a pint of Guinness from the landlord and i watched this pint of nectar being poured with care. I waited patiently until it was passed in my direction and took the first decent sip. I was not disappointed it was a stunning pint. I have called a few times on my was through and found the pub, it's locals and the landlord very welcoming. If you visit Wexford drop in you wont be disappointed.

Went into the bar and my friend asked for pint of heineken and pint of water and bar man said you are joking me. I am paying for music and you ask for water. He was buying a drink and he didn't want to give him water

This is apparently the father of the United States Navy. Something I didn't know, but at least two bartenders gave me curious looks when I didn't know who he was. There is also a very nice little traditional pub named after him about two blocks away on the same street.

Lovely memorial statue to Wexford man John Barry who rose in rank in the American Navy to senior commander of it's entire fleet, playing an integral part in the US War of Independence.
He stands looking out to sea on Crescent Quay in full navy garb, cutlass brandished and a rope and anchor at his feet.
This bronze statue was gifted by the people of America and has been visited by two American presudents; Eisenhower and Kennedy.

The John Barry memorial is a statue in the crescent quay of Wexford harbour. It is a fine memorial to a local Wexford man who, as a boy, was brought to America by his immigrant parents.
During the Revolutionary War of Independence he became commodore of the new American Navy and served with distinction in his new role.
It is unusual that, as an American citizen, he is remembered with such reverence in the town of his birth.

Interesting to have a monument to one of the fathers of the American Navy (J. P. Jones was the other) in Wexford Ireland. However, Commodore Barry was born in Wexford and so the connection. He looks out towards the river and the sea. Looking for the statue we walked along the seaside, and on the boardwalk/pier where the commercial fishing boats were tied up. It was a nice pastime, on a nice day.
