An absolute waste of 256.00 dollars for a cruise to emerald bay in which no one talked about any of the history of such a beautiful place. We basically sat on a boat with strangers went for a ride and learned nothing. Not to mention the mediocre service. For the price you charge it should be somewhat entertaining. At least turn on a radio so we can listen to music.

This is one of the few places to rent speed boats without requiring Captain experience/license. We were given a long, thorough introduction into boating by Jagger and then off we went. We LOVED catching air over the waves...it was like a roller coaster. Glad that I was wearing my motion sickness patch. Renting the float was NOT worth the money since it was very difficult to hang on to the float and we actually caught more air with the boat rather than the float (which was kind of a disappointment). We did not rent water skis, because it was our first time driving a boat and did not want to risk injuring ourselves.

Minus 1 star due to the very dirty bathroom next to the rental shop. Plus, apparently, our speed boat had a throttle problem. Since this was our first experience driving the speed boat, we did not realize that the boat should NOT jerk when moving from rest to the slow 5 knots per hour and should also NOT jerk when slowing down from 5 knots per hour to Neutral. When we returned the boat, the staff had a difficult time parking the boat because she said that the boat had a throttle problem. We then realized, that she was talking about how the boat would suddenly jerk when starting up from Neutral and also shifting down to Neutral.

My husband and friends wanted to go to Emerald Bay and tour the Vikingholm there, but the 1 mile hike wasn't going to happen for us. We found out about this cruise and tour which was perfect for us 70 years olds! Nick was our Captain and very knowledgeable about the lake, geology and history. We took the 11:00 cruise which is a 30 minute ride by boat to Emerald Bay. He dropped us off and we enjoyed 3 hours with our adult kids and grandkids who hiked down. The Vikingholm tour was part of the package. When Nick dropped us off he said to meet him back at the pier at 1:30 or 2:00 our choice. If you are not into hiking down then up a steep grade road, I highly recommend the Vikingholm cruise and tour.

Convenient South Lake Tahoe CA location of this historic camp and marina, next to a beach and cantina, where one can rent motor boats and other watercraft to enjoy this beautiful and huge mountain lake.

Poor communication. No one really knows what’s going on until you get in the boat. DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME!!!!!

1. We wanted a 12-13 person boat with tow package for a tube
A. We called ahead and they told us we couldn’t make a reservation, which is fine, but that they had lots of boats and hardly any reservations.
A1. When we arrived, they eventually showed us that 3-4 of their boats weren’t even working!! Would have been nice to know that the boats we asked for weren’t even working!
B. While checking in they said they had the bigger boat with the tow package and took my credit card. They didn’t even tell me how much I was paying.
C. Turns out they didn’t even fill out their own paperwork so when we got down to the deck hands, they had no idea what we paid for.
D. Finally they figure out that the only boat they have available Must be the one we paid for. I quickly noticed this is NOT the 12-13 person boat we asked for! 🤬
D1. Ok no big deal, we’ll squeeze in...... 15-20 mins later and...oh wait!! Sorry this one doesn’t have the tow package you ordered either so no more having fun on the water like we came to do!!!
E. We reluctantly accept because I have my entire family waiting for an hour so... We go thru the entire list of rules and regulations and By the way, you’re not allowed to jump in the water on this boat, no going in the lake, period!!!!!
F. And now they’re pissed at me and giving me attitude!!! How dare I be pissed that we’ve now wasted almost an hour and have NOTHING we wanted.

Yeah right. We got outta there and had a GREAT TIME at Ski Run Marina where they gave us EXACTLY what we asked for!!!

If they had any organization, they would have 1. Told me on the phone that a few boats are down and we’re best off coming much earlier or 2. When checking in, don’t take my money and tell me you have what I asked for when you Don’t!!
3. Don’t get pissed at me when you’re the ones who screwed the pooch. Manager Dave is clearly the attitude behind all the problems.

The only thing they did right was to give me a refund.

We rented a powerboat on Labor Day weekend as part of a family celebration. We had 16 people go out in two shifts and they all had a good time. Unfortunately the boat we had originally reserved - the 28-footer - had been taken out of service the day before so they had to downgrade us a bit to the 27-footer. But those things happen I suppose, and they were good enough to email me about the change the day before our outing, to let me know, so it didn't come as a rude surprise. We had also rented another boat from a nearby marina on the same morning so it was interesting to compare the difference in procedure: Camp Richardson's sign-out process was SO much more tedious, requiring a jillion signatures and initials over 3 pages of forms. The safety briefing wasn't any better than at the other marina, but no wonder Camp Richardson wants you there 45 minutes ahead of time, just to do the paperwork. One doubts that that's really necessary. But the dock hands were excellent - professional, knowledgeable, helpful, and able to be graceful under pressure (considering it was Labor Day weekend). And the equipment itself - the boat - was clean and in top condition. All in all, a good experience.

This was the best, to see Emerald Bay from the water is a totally different experience than driving to the overlook. If you have about 3 hours, take this trip. They serve drinks, Rum Runner, yum. And others. Taking pictures from a new view point is nice. The Captain and crew was very professional. Our luck a storm blew in as we were coming back, white caps, wind and all, the captain docked the boat and there were plenty of people there to help us off the boat to the dock. All in all, a fun, fun trip with friends.

In the summer (even during the week) get to marina by 9:30 or you won't be able to park close to the marina. Cost for parking is $12, but if you've booked at tour they'll refund that when you check in. (or if you eat at the restaurant they'll refund your parking, too.) We took the 3 hr Vikingsholm boat trip ($105 each incl tax) that included entry for the Vikingsholm house tour. Trip from the Marina to Vikingsholm is 30 minutes, and then you get 2 hrs to take the house tour and wander the trails (one of which goes to Eagles Falls). There's a pier now at the beach in front of the house (that's where you get on/off the boat) and lots of people on the beach because there's now a kayak rental place just down from the house/beach. We hadn't been there in about 25 years so we were surprised by that. And then the boat picks you back up at the dock so you don't have to walk back up the hill to the parking lot...or do hardly any walking if you don't want to. For the trips across the lake to Emerald Bay (where Vikingsholm is) and the tour and seeing Eagle Falls, we thought it well worth the price. Weather was fantastic, and Daryl was a great boat captain. Inside of the house was OK...the outside architecture is what's kinda neat. Nice easy walk through to Tallac historic site (next door) with easy (flat) pathways, and some neat old homes (it's free)..that's what we did since we got there at 9:00 to park and tour wasn't til 1:00. ate at the restaurant...cheeseburger was great!

We rented a 1 Kajak and 1 standup SUP for 45min for my two kids.
They charged 75.00$ for this. since they are the only rental place for kids toys, we had no other choice to pay for it.
this price is not normal. I don’t understand this tip off mentality. Why not keep the prices human.
also the beach is very crowded. camp richardson is not a place we would recommend.

The boat was nice, the Captain and mate were nice, but the tour itself was really just a boat ride. There was very little narrative. The Captain would answer questions if asked, but there was no PA system so unless you were standing right next to him you could not hear what he was saying. With the exception of a bit of information that he gave out when we reached Vikingsholm for which I had to get out of my seat and go to stand next to him to hear, he did not offer up a single tidbit about what we were seeing on the lake. While this tour was less expensive than some of the other tours, for $59.00 a person (plus $11 drinks), it didn't seem like a good value. We thought that with a name like the rum runner, that there would be more of a party vibe on the boat. They were playing easy listening music very softly and there definitely was no partying going on. Of all the activities that my family of 8 (ages 21 to 59) did during our week in Tahoe, everyone gave this activity a definite thumbs down. We do a lot of boating so without the narrative, this was just an expensive day (hour and a half) on a boat. If you are just looking for a boat ride, the boat is very nice.
