Well-kept castle, interesting route of prehistoric archaeological finds and Magna Graecia, large religious paintings and a room on Garibaldi.
Many things are missing about the Grifeo family (some photographs, the family tree and 2 prints of self-portraits are taken), I expected more paintings about the Grifeo, more mobile and etc...

Although there is no definite evidence of this, it is believed that the original core of this castle may have been built by the Normans in the 11th century. The first dark news about the fortress dates back to 1355, when it is mentioned among the possessions of the barons Grifeo (or Graffeo) lords of Partanna and other Sicilian locations. Much later, at the beginning of the 1600s, since its military function had ceased, the castle became the noble residence of the family: the external appearance did not change much, but the interior was completely renovated with elegant halls for ceremonies, manor houses, guest rooms, etc.
At the beginning of the last century the castle, which had fallen almost into neglect, became the property of Baron Girolamo Adragna of Altavilla (originally from Trapani) who undertook a radical and expensive renovation as a result of which the property was restored to its former glory. At the edge of the castle was planted a beautiful garden, full of flowers and ornamental plants. For almost a century the Adragna family retained ownership of the building; finally, in 1990, they ceded it to the Sicily Region. Castello Grifeo now houses the Civic Museum of Prehistory of Lower Belice and is regularly open to visitors.
The castle has a quadrangular plan, arranged around a large central courtyard that serves as a square of arms. Massive shoe walls (thicker at the base than at the top) surround the entire structure, reinforced by mighty towers. The battlements are mixed, both Guelph (rectangular blocks) and Ghibelline (“dovetail” blocks). The façade of the castle facing west has a pointed-arched entrance, surmounted by a small bertesca, and a series of quadrangular windows. The main entrance, framed in a beautiful rusticated, is on the eastern side (the one in front of the Belvedere Bellini).
Internally, the castle is on two levels, the lowest of which is basement. From the courtyard, where the fifteenth-century coat of arms of the Grifeo (a raptor in the act of catching the prey) is exposed, you access the large representative hall, which is divided into two parts by a powerful round arch. An eighteenth-century fresco depicts Roger I of Sicily in the act of killing a Moor during the battle of Mazara del Vallo (which in 1075 allowed the Normans to extend their dominions in Sicily to the detriment of the Saracens). One of the two knights accompanying the sovereign is Giovanni Grifeo, a famous ancestor of the ancient owners of the castle who intended to celebrate his exploits. The smaller rooms, without the original furnishings, are used for museum exhibitions. The coat of arms of the Adragna can be seen on the door of one of these rooms. On the lower level you can also visit the garden, the stables and the cellars, where ancient tools for wine production are exhibited.

First of all I would like to congratulate the very helpful and nice ticket holder. The castle is well maintained and above all the museum/exhibition is well set up. Those who go Partanna can not forget a visit to the castle.

To be able to visit this castle we had to work a bit: since no one was answering our calls, nor was the website working, we asked a business in the town of Partenna by telephone for the opening hours.
The museum inside is very interesting, especially regarding the section of finds from the Iron and Bronze Ages. It's a shame we weren't able to visit the basement and the cellar, which were closed for restoration.

Public holiday, April 25th, the extraordinary opening is advertised on the Region's website, and free of charge, but in the afternoon we found it closed! Little seriousness

I find myself visiting the Grifeo Castle, I do it again after about 5 years and I am really disappointed, disappointed because it was not possible to visit the entire Castle, it was not possible to visit the Castle farm, it was not possible to go where they still come well preserve the large barrels, it was not possible to visit the heart of the castle, its dungeons, it was not possible to visit the courtyard, the upper floors, none of this.
With bitterness, a hasty tour forced by a dark and gloomy path, and then feeling outside the Castle despite being inside it, this is the distressing sensation.
I wonder how it is possible to transform such an interesting site in such a despicable way?
Those who visit a Castle do so primarily for the Castle and its history, to relive its walls, to imagine its courtyard, the idea of the museum inside it can be an added value to it but it does not tell the story of those walls.
We paid 8 euros, a very expensive ticket for two people to visit practically nothing, if I had been allowed to visit the entire Castle as I did years ago I would have paid even more, today whoever administers it would have to review it a little differently things about his way of doing cultural tourism.
I hope to return with another administration and relive and revive those past sensations that a site like this can give.

No way. The town of Partanna, interesting for its baroque, still denies tourists who arrived facing a difficult road network, the visit of its castle which we tried to visit in 2020 but closed due to COVID. In 2023 closed on Mondays due to lack of staff. The archaeological site is in poor conditions of abandonment and the mother church is open only for religious functions. I don't think I will go back there again.

Trovato Chiuso, impossibile contattare qualcuno.
