It was a dry, warm winter's day in February when my bachelor party group was steered to this house of tequila. We were high and drunk on the joys of the Mexican wildnerness, adrenaline wafting off us like perfume, and last on our list before embarking back to our ship was a promised tasting of authentic Mexican tequila.
We were naive young men. Some believe naivete is the only means of obtaining joy in a cynical world. But much like the Trojans and the Greeks, we trusted the gift horse was just a gift horse.
The proprietor of the establishment wove us a tale of incredible brewing and chemistry that indicted all the tequila sellers in the US of impropriety and greed. It's not unbelievable. Capitalism will offer you one hand in friendship and pilfer your wallet with the other. Why wouldn't we believe large corporate brewers infuse their tequilas with so many preservatives that the drinks could be used to clean car batteries?
Tasting was a different experience. I've always been averse to hard liquor. The taste makes me want to find my grandfather's old gym socks and vomit into them. And yet, the tequila served at our tasting was smoother than a baby covered in vaseline. The proprietor explained the smoothness was in the careful ageing, the charcoal in the barrel, the tears of all the children they have stomping on agave plants in the back room. We believed it. We were naive, after all.
I won't say how many bottles were purchased. It's hard to convey how much trust we had, not only in the proprietor of the establishment, but also the guide who recommended it. He had lulled us in with friendship and camaraderie, and being young men on an adventure, we only sought good times. The careful structure of the racket was clear in hindsight. We were betrayed. Capitalism's other hand is a sneaky one.
What was purchased was not what was tasted. Every bottle we bought, regardless of age, vintage, label was the same cheap, paint thinner-smelling tequila. Even worse, their most 'aged' variety that came in a black bottle was the same tequila, and the bottle's color was spray-painted on. If we'd bothered to taste it, we might've gotten sick.
It's a clever ruse. It relies on establishing a long chain of trust, leaving you feeling good and happy and connected to people you never knew you'd meet, and maybe that the differences between people living the world over are insignificant, only to have both your heart and wallet torn out of you like a vindictive ex on a spiteful quest.

Enjoy the sample tasting because that's the only time you'll ever taste tequila like it. If you choose to buy their 'vintage', don't say I didn't warn you.

I have been to this tasting and tour several times. The last time I went, I had a bad experience. I was overcharged for what I bought and did not realize it. They had attempted to charge two of my cards for 37,542 which did not get authorized. The bank card that I used they overcharged me $70 for the bottles that I bought. The girl behind the counter was very confusing, and it was not a good experience. I have heard of the bait and switch on the product. I will write a review after I have opened the bottles and let you know if they are using substandard tequila than the ones they offer at the tasting. Be careful, they do take advantage of you after the tasting, which can cause you not to be as aware of what they are charging you.

They let you sample high quality tequila . Then you buy it for $100 dollars , only to find out when you get home that it isn’t the same tequila ! It is a low end version , not the high quality stuff you thought you tasted .

Tourist trap. They will rip you off.

They will sell you tequila that is not what you tasted. You can tell by the fact the shop doesn't have prices of the bottles. BEWARE

What we purchased was nothing close to what we sampled. Beware.

The samples we tried were amazing and a few people in our party bought a few bottles. When we drank it most people spit it out. The mostly full bottles ended up in the trash.

This was the biggest waste of my time. It is not an actual Tequila Farm, it is just a little museum with a few history facts. Mostly everything they talked about I knew from watching television. You pay $5.00 to walk in a circle.
Do not buy the Tequila at the end of the tour, but if you do decide to buy some pick one of the bottles near the area where you tasted. Do not get kne that.is already wrapped up for you. They do a bait and switch. I got a bottle.that was already wrapped my daughter picked one off the shelf. The.guy told her he had some already wrapped but she said she wanted the one she picked (smart girl). When we got home hers was just like the one we tasted, mine on the other hand was a watered down version.

So I bought a bottle, and what I opened at home is what I tasted in Mexico, so I can't speak to the bait and switch claims. I have a very tasty, and very expensive 750ml bottle of Anejo, that's about half gone now.

We weren't even planning to stop. We hired a taxi and guide for an island tour, and our entrance fee to Punta Sur came with a "Free Margarita" wristband for what turned out to be this stop. It was late in the day by the time we arrived at Hacienda Antigua on the Transverse Road. In fact I think it was technically due to close and our driver called ahead to have them stay open for us (possible kickback scheme? Or our guide really wanted his free margarita as well). So it was just us, and we may have gotten the short version tour, and did not linger on the lovely grounds

You start at the front gate where the bartender makes up the margarita, pouring what he said was an 7 year old Anejo. He mixed it with Fresca which was novel, and now I have Fresca on my shopping list because I want to try that again.

Inside we tasted the Anejo, Extra Anejo, and four of their infused beverages (which the others said were good, but not to my taste). When I decided to buy the Anejo I also asked to taste the Blanco and Reposado just to confirm, and by far Anejo and Extra Anejo were superior. I think during tasting the Anejo was described as 8 years, and the Extra Anejo as 12 years

The brand is Regalo de Dios (I have since learned it has very limited availability in the States as Number Juan). The pitch is that they use only 100% Blue Agave with no added sugars and that's what makes it so smooth. Well, yes and no - tequila production is heavily regulated in Mexico. To be tequila it has to be produced in Jalisco (and a few other noted regions) and use only Blue agave. It can be 51%+ blue agave with added sugars (a mixto) or it can be 100% blue agave with no added sugars. This is 100% Blue Agave, but so are a lot of other tequilas - just look at the bottle

What really makes it so smooth are aging and alcohol. In Mexico tequila can be between 35 and 55% abv. This is 38%. In the US and CAN it has to be 40% so right there the Regalo will go down a bit smoother (whereas the Number Juan will be 40%). Also aging is a factor which is why a Blanco is harsher than an Extra Anejo.

My only quibble with this is that they said the Anejo was either 7 or 8 years old. There's no such thing - an Anejo by law (the Mexican NOM system) is aged on the barrel for no more than three years, otherwise it becomes, by law, an Extra Anejo. Now I suppose it's possible that they aged it for three years, bottled it, and sat the bottle for four or five more, but that just makes an old Anejo, not an 8 year aged Anejo. Regardless, the Regalo de Dios Anejo is very good, and the bottle I brought home matches what I remember tasting.

Also, the bottle itself was around $100 and it was only when I unwrapped it at home that I realized it was a 750ml, not a liter. That makes it very expensive. But again, no bait and switch took place - the tasting bottles were also 750ml, and I was just a little too drunk by that point on the island tour to have noticed :-)
