This is a short hike, about a mile, to a very interesting sinkhole. We are so glad we happened upon this. It is a very easy hike, a few stairs, nothing overly strenuous. We definitely recommend searching this out while in the area.

Straight easy hike to the sink area where you climb in by a large metal stairway and out by a somewhat more gradual climb (if you go clockwise). It's got an interesting sink to explore before climbing out. Good warm up hike for the day, and if you are the first of the day, there are plenty of spider webs to walk through.

Not all the great things in this National Park are below ground. This is a great 2 mile out and back hike with a loop at the end that will treat you to the not only the forest but also a geologic formation of sink holes that bring water into form the cave system below. This hike has more topography than may appear and the views of the sink and cliffs around it are impressive.

The trail starts in a beautiful Cedar forest that is transitioning to deciduous. The trail is fairly level here and the views are mostly the forest. However, it is in this section where I came face to face with two deer as we hiked near dusk. This is a great section to experience wildlife.

After 0.75 miles you will fork and begin a descent into the crater. At first it seems fairly benign but soon you will drop several flights of stairs and you get your first glimpses of the Sandstone cap above the limestone that produces the dry caves at Mammoth. Soon you will begin to see 3 separate sinks. When we visited they were all try but you could see in the bottom when water seeps into the limestone and begins to carve those passages for the cave. Take the side trails to the other sinks before climbing back out and connecting with the out and back trail.

The one thing I noticed leaving was how quickly you transition from forest topography to drop off and if the trail was not there how easily you could simply walk off the forest floor into the abyss of the sink. Anyways a great hike to experience both the forest and the topography that makes this park so special. This is the Best Hike in Mammoth Cave National Park.

This hike took about an hour with my two boys ages 5 and 6. They loved it and we really enjoyed the stairs and cave structures. Beautiful!

Beautiful 2 mile round trip trail. Relatively easy, but does include stairs. Underground river was nearly gone when we went, but it fills up regularly so ymmv. Still well worth seeing.

This is a very nice, peaceful trail, with some beautiful scenery along the way. The water feature was very dry on our visit. There are some nice stretches through cedar forest, as well as along the cliffs. There are over 100 stairs down and up. I would recommend going to the right to begin the loop trail. Our kids (8-15) all did the hike easily.

Probably one of the best trails south of the Green River! The trail starts off with a quick descent, but then it is rather rolling. Eventually, you come to the humongous sink where the underground river pops out for a bit. So beautiful and totally serene. You feel as if you are in another world! There are lots of steps down and then lots of steps up on the other side of the sink. I had to stop several times to catch my breath! But it was totally worth it. I visited in February and loved it, but can imagine that it is even much prettier in the spring and fall, and also more crowded. I loved having the place to myself! A porta potty is located at the trailhead.

I highly recommend that a visit to Turnhole Bend Nature Trail just down the road a bit where you can see where this underground river joins the Green River.
