The hermit's cave is a hidden gem of local history. Steep woodland steps lead to the large cave in the sandstone rock of the woods. Easy to imagine the hermit from Derby living there, devoted to God, and being sought out by pilgrims. Good cafe in the nearby village of Dale Abbey and lovely local walks and Abbey ruins.

Only a short walk away from the Abbey ruins and church. Make sure to follow the Nomad trail, turning left if walking from the church, rather than walking straight uphill from the split in the footpath. There's alternative parking in a layby a little further from the village.

There's an information board but obviously not much else to see. Good that it's preserved. There are at least two other such caves within Derbyshire - Anchor church at Ingleby and Birchover Druid cave within Rowtor rocks.

We enjoyed a walk around the hermitage taking in the woods and the hermits cave. The cave is up a hill and a bit of a climb but well worth the effort.

A lovely family walk from stanton by dale, over the fields to hermits cave. The children loved exploring these. over to the Dale Abbey Arch and then back via the cow shed (cafe) for drink and cake. Wonderful afternoon

Having watched a conversion of one of these troglodyte cave dwellings on Grand Designs, couldn't pass up the change to visit The Hermitage near Dale Abbey (between Derby and Nottingham).
Old abandoned cave house, cut into the local permian sandstone to provide a primitive kind of shelter.
Only one small room, with religious carvings at each end and modern name tags.
Easy to park in the village, walking around the vicarage to the cave. Lots of signs and info boards.
Had the place to myself early on a Sunday morning, even in the school holidays!
Unusual and interesting.
Free to visit!

The Hermitage in Dale Abbey is located in Hermit's Wood (itself an ancient remnant of Sherwood Forest) about halfway up a very steep hill.

It is signposted adequately, so it is not a case of ferreting about amongst the overgrowth looking for any hole in the cliff face, however you do need to ensure you are a) capable of going up steep steps and b) wearing suitable footwear for doing so.

You can approach Hermits Wood on foot through the beautiful (and tiny) village of Dale Abbey and that will involve you climbing upwards. Alternatively you can approach the woods from across the fields off Woodpecker Hill/Potato Pit Lane. Be aware though that this will involve a very deep descent on steps that seldom conform in size, and have absolutely no hand-grip opportunities whatsoever. Be very careful if approaching this way.

The Hermitage itself is modest but still in good nick. It measures only 6m east to west and 2.75m north to south. There are no antiquated carvings on the walls (or none surviving) with the exception of the recesses cut out presumably to insert small candles and a small cross on the eastern wall.

Above the doors and windows on the external face are the remains of at least four joist holes which show us that this Hermit would have had a covered lean-to type structure when he lived and worshipped here.

Incidentally, the Hermit was believed to be a Baker from Derby who had a vision from The Virgin Mary which told him to go and live in Depedale (the old name for Dale village). Upon finding it thoroughly uninhabitable and marshy (which in places it still is!) he opted to carve himself a house and worship site from the rock.

The Dale Abbey Hermitage is a Scheduled Monument and proof at last that good things actually can come out of Derby.

Take the nice relaxing walk through the small village and past the Abbey & Church up to the Hermits cave. Read the history to the kids and try to imagine what it was like all them years ago. Stroll back and enjoy a cold beer at the Carpenters Arms after. Perfect afternoon 😁

Just of the main road running through Dale Abbey are the woods - The Hermitage, these offer several walks leading left and right away from Dale Abbey and are very steep in places, but worth a wander around with lots of other ramblers if your unlucky, but a good spot to stretch your legs and see some history and the monk.

This is an interesting spot and the story of the hermitage is fascinating. A short walk from the village of Dale Abbey but can be a struggle in places if one is not able bodied. Peaceful spot to explore and good walks around and about.

Very steep and muddy in places. A bit like abseiling down to the hermitage, but we took the wrong path. Signage not very good. We could have done with a ordnance survey map to check on the footpaths. We ended up walking back along the main road.
